DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 7

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, 80% of the students should be able to:
a. solves for each interior and exterior angle of a polygon; and
b. determine the sum of the interior and exterior angles of a convex polygon.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
• Topic: Sum of the Interior and Exterior Angles of a Convex Polygon
• References: Mathematics 7 Learner’s Material
• Instructional Materials: Visual Aids, Blackboard, Chalk
III. PROCEDURES

A. PRELIMINARY a. Prayer
ACTIVITIES • The class will start the prayer
b. Greetings
• The teacher will greet the class and the students will
response
c. Checking of Attendance
• Ask the students if there any absent in the class.
d. Review
• Asking the students about the topic of their previous
lesson.
e. Motivation
• GROUP ACTIVITY: “SKETCH AND MMEASURE ME”
• Materials Needed: Pencil, Paper and Protractor
• Instructions:
1. Draw a triangle. Using a protractor, determine the
measure of its interior angles and determine the
sum of its interior angles.
2. Draw a quadrilateral. Then, fix a vertex and draw
diagonals from the vertex. Answer the following:
a. How many diagonals are drawn from the fixed
vertex?
b. How many triangles are formed by this/these
diagonals?
c. Without actually measuring, can you determine
the sum of the interior angles of a
quadrilateral?
3. Draw a pentagon. Then, fix a vertex and draw
diagonals from the vertex. Answer the following:
a. How many diagonals are drawn from the fixed
vertex?
b. How many triangles are formed by this/these
diagonals?
c. Without actually measuring, can you determine
the sum of the interior and angles of a
quadrilateral?

B. ACTIVITY INDIVIDUAL ACTVITY

• Draw the figure below that indicates in Column 1 and
complete the table. Do this in a one whole sheet of
paper.

C. ANALYSIS ➢ GUIDE QUESTIONS

• What did you observed in the number of sides and
number of triangles used in each polygon?
• How do you find the number of diagonals from a fixed
vertex and the number diagonals formed by the
diagonals drawn from the fixed vertex?
• Based from the activity, how did you solve the sum of
the interior angles?

D. ABSTRACTION ❖ Sum of the Interior and Exterior Angles of a Convex

Polygon
• In finding the sum of the interior angle, the formula is
(n-2) (180°) where n is the number of sides of a regular
polygon.
Example:
Find the sum of interior angle of the regular polygon.
Since pentagon is a 5-sided polygon, therefore n=5.
Substituting the value of n.
(n-2) (180°)
= (5-2) (180°)
= (3) (180°)
= 540°
Therefore, the sum of the convex pentagon is 540°
• Measure of Each Interior Angle of a Convex Polygon
In finding the measure of each interior angle, the formula
(𝑛−2)(180°)
is .
𝑛
Example:
Find the measure of each interior angle of the convex
square.
Since square is a 4-sided polygon, therefore n=4.
Substituting the value of n.
(𝑛−2)(180°)
𝑛
(4−2)(180°)
= 4
(2)(180°)
= 4
360°
=
4
= 90°
Therefore, the measure of each interior angle is 90°
• In finding the sum of the exterior angle of a convex
360
polygon the formula is .
𝑛
Example:
The measure of the exterior angles of a convex
quadrilateral.
Find the measure of each exterior angles.
360 360
= = 90°
𝑛 4
• The sum of the exterior angles of a convex polygon (one
at each vertex) is <A + <B + <C + <D + <E = 360°
Example:
The sum of the exterior angle of a convex polygon is
360°
Solve for x:
70° + 60° + 65° + 40° + 𝑥 = 360°
235° + 𝑥 = 360°
x = 360° − 235°
x = 125°
• The interior and exterior angles of a polygon form a
linear pair and they are supplementary.

E. APPLICATION • The teacher will give an oral recitation to know if the

students understand the lesson.
1. Given ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 with the exterior angle on each vertex as
shown:
Let the interior angles at A, B, and C measure a, b,
and c respectively while the exterior angles measure
d, e, and f. Determine the following:
𝒂 + 𝒅 = ____________________
𝒃 + 𝒆 = ____________________
𝒄 + 𝒇 = ____________________
(𝒂 + 𝒅) + (𝒃 + 𝒆) + (𝒄 + 𝒇) = ____________________
(𝒂 + 𝒃 + 𝒄) + (𝒅 + 𝒆 + 𝒇) = _______________________
𝒂 + 𝒃 + 𝑪 = ____________________
𝒅 + 𝒆 + 𝒇 = ____________________

F. ASSESSMENT • Answer the following.

1. For each regular polygon, determine the measure of
an exterior angle;
a. quadrilateral b. hexagon c. nonagon
2. Determine the sum of the interior angles of the
following convex polygons:
a. pentagon b. heptagon c. octagon
3. Each exterior angle of a regular polygon measures
20°. Determine the sum of its interior angles.
G. ASSIGNMENT • Given the following figures, solve for the value of x.
