Assessment 1: Technical Hand Illustration Portfolio

Subject Name: Fashion Illustration Fundamentals 1

Subject Number: 83622
Submission Date: Week 6 before 9 am
Where: Canvas Assignments
Assessment Weighting: 30% (individual exercise)

Subject Learning Objectives:

1. You will be able to present fashion and textiles design work effectively utilising various visual
platforms.
2. You will be able to creatively problem solve approaches to fashion and textile design practices
through illustration processes.
3. You will learn to develop an original aesthetic sensibility to illustration and visual presentation.
5. You will develop appropriate technical skills for both digital and hand illustration techniques.
6. You will have developed an approach to illustration that displays accuracy, rigour and care in finished
outcome

PREAMBLE:
Fashion technical sketches can be created digitally; however, it is through hand drawing that you can develop a
stylistic approach to the technical sketch work. While accuracy and detail are highly important, using hand drawing
techniques you can create a greater sense of the garment through a precise stylistic approach.

This assessment is designed to familiarise you with detailed hand rendered technical representation of garments
on the body, including proportion and garment construction details.

While fashion design is about creativity and innovation, this component requires the technical skills and
understanding needed to support creativity. Students will be required to translate proficiency and communication
through illustration. Attention to detail will be important, as will understanding how to correctly represent and
render 3 dimensional garments.

ASSESSMENT TASK:
From Weeks 01 through to 05, you will be introduced to new garments and drawing techniques and are required
to complete detailed technical sketches during class and as homework exercises. There will be a focus on
developing a confidence and stylistic approach to the technical drawings. Each week there will be a different
garment and technical focus. These technical sketches need to be neat, detailed and display an understanding of
garment construction. Each week feedback will be provided in studio on the progress of the work. It will be
important to keep good time management skills in order to successfully complete this assessment task. The folder
should be sequential, and each week must be labelled clearly for easy reference.
The
work will be assessed primarily on your abilities to correctly render the garments and display an understanding of
garment construction; neatness in presentation of work will also be assessed and will be discussed in class Week
05.

LATE WORK AND SUBMISSION:

It is important that you finalise all requests for extension prior to the due date for assessment.

For extensions under 1 week:

Email the subject coordinator before the submission date with the correct supporting documentation. For
example, a Doctor's Certificate outlining the reason for the inability to hand in with days that the student has been
incapacitated or unable to work.
Extension eligibility relies on showing days that you have been dramatically affected in this documentation, and
the length of the extension granted is generally the number of days the student has been unable to work.

For extensions greater than 1 week:

If you are applying for an extension greater than one week you are required to submit an online request through

Please also remember to refer to the subject outline regarding due dates.
Late work not submitted by the published due date will not be assessed unless prior arrangements have been
made with the subject coordinator. It is advisable to contact the subject coordinator at the earliest possible
opportunity if such a case occurs.
