ASSIGNMENT NO 3

Problem 1
An orthogonal machining process is executed on a work-piece
specimen. The workpiece width is 0.05 cm, the undeformed chip
thickness is 0.1 mm, and the cutting speed is 31.4 m/s. The
cutting tool is made from a C-2 carbide with a 10 ° rake angle.
During the process, the following data was collected:
Cutting Force = 1200 N
Thrust Force = 850 N
Deformed Chip Thickness = .15 mm
a. Estimate the shear angle.
b. Determine the coefficient of friction on the tool rake face.

Problem 2
An orthogonal cutting process is carried out on 1018 steel
using a carbide cutting tool with a 10° rake angle. The
cutting speed is 100 m/min, the depth of cut is 0.25 mm, and
the width of the cut is 4mm. Measurements at the tool rake
face indicate that the length of the seizure zone is 1mm, the
thickness of the seizure zone is 0.075 mm, and the length of
the contact zone is 1.25 mm. Estimate the true shear strain
experienced by the workpiece in the secondary shear zone
as it exits the seizure zone at a distance of 0.075 mm from
the tool interface and a distance of 0.035 mm from the tool
interface.
