Lesson Idea Name: Plant vs. Animal Cells
Grade Level/Content Area: 5th grade/Life Science
Content Standard Addressed: (List the number and the verbiage for the standard.)
S5L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the parts of plant and animal
cells.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner: 1.1.c. Students use able to do by the end of this lesson:
technology to seek feedback that informs I would like my students to know the similarities
and improves their practice and to and differences of parts in plant and animal cells.
demonstrate their learning in a variety of
ways.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?
I will be able to compare the parts of a plant cell and an animal cell.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.
Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.
☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
I will go over the objectives while the students are listening. I will keep the goals up on the board so
they can look back at them. As they start their learning, we will go over what cells are and the cell
parts. This will access their prior knowledge. They see plants, people, and animals every day, so this
is breaking down the differences and similarities in what things are made up of. The students will do
the interactive presentation using Pear Deck on their own. Students will be able to discuss and talk
about the content. We will discuss each question and draw labeled models on the board as a class.

The students will be assessed by using Blookit to see if they have learned the content and what I
need to go back over as a teacher. We will conclude the lesson by going over the assessment and
models.
Managing student learning: The tools will cause a shift in behavior because students are thinking
and analyzing the information. The students are doing more than just reading a textbook or
memorizing facts. I will allow for time on tasks and shift from passive to active learning by setting
time limits. Students need to have conversations and discussions to hear other ideas and understand
and analyze the information.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This supports Universal Design for Learning because the students are engaged and interacting during
this lesson with the tools. The multiple means of engagement are supported because the students
are motivated and engaged towards their learning goals. The tool is also student paced so they can
do the interactive presentation at their own pace. The multiple means of representation are
supported because students learn and perceive information differently. The multiple means of
action and expression are supported because they can express what they have learned.
Reflective Practice:
I believe this tool will help students build an understanding in a way they could not with traditional
tools. When students are participating in interactive presentations, they are more engaged. You can
also check their scores and answers. So many teachers have PowerPoint on the board and read
them. Students could be daydreaming, doodling, or not paying attention. Using this tool will allow
me to make sure they are interacting. I am overly excited to implement the Pear Deck because
growing up in schools we never had this. The most we did was Kahoot, which was fun, but that is
used to assess. When I was learning content, it was very boring and just straight from the board.
