EXPERIMENT *3
NORMAL CONSISTENCY OF HYDRAULIC CEMENT
(ASTM [87-94% Standard Test Method for Normal Consistency of Cement)
(ASTM C 1500-00 Reference Masses and Delices for Determining Mass
‘and Volume for Use in Physical Testing of Hydroulic Cement)
OBJECTIVE
To determine the normal consistency of hydraulic cement sample using Semi-Automatic
Vicat Apparatus.
DISCUSSION
This method covers the determination oF normal consistency of hydraulic cement.
That is by determing the required amount of water to prepare the Cement paste for the
next test whichis the initial ond final time of setting. Since cement when manufactured
produce different batches ond may also differ in fineness, cement paste with the same.
water content may have contrasting result in its consistency when first mixed. For this
reason, the consistency of the cement is standardized by varying the aterw content until
the paste has given the resistance to penetration, when itis first mixed.
‘When testing the hydraulic cement, it iS necessary to perform trial mixes until a
mix Of required consistency is mixed. The Omount of water required to produce a cement
poste of etondard consistency is important for the determination of the water con-
tent For the setting time.

Preparation of the apparatus:
| Adjust the hydraulic regulator such that the falling time for a 4Omm distance is
about 6 te 7 seconds.

Preporation of the somple:
LWeigh G50g of cement sample and place it on the mixing pan. Pile the sample into a
conical form with a crater in the center.
2Prepore water necessary fo attain standard consistency of cement. The water to be
added usually ranges from 27% to 30% by weight of the cement. Pour water into
the crater of cement pile. Record the time was is added.
».Let the cement absorbs the water for a while then mix them thoroughly for nat more
than 3 minutes. (Toss the cement paste into the other hand about G times and G
inches apart)
[Link] the cement paste into a conical ring. Scrape off excess by 0 spatula and
flatten the surfoce without compacting the cement paste.
5,Position the sample on the base of the Vicat apparatus.
c-Lift up the hydraulic regulator to control the speed of the plunger stops at point
Gmm above the glass plate, the cement is said to be in standard consistency. Other-
wise, prepare another sample by varying the amount of water in reference to the
Previous mix, then repeat the test until the standard consistency {s achieved.

OBSERVATIONS / ANALYSES
This experiment used more water by ratio as compored to the Standard Consistency
recommended which is 26% to 33% for general use including for concreting, plaste-
ting and ting. This is also more than the 27% to 30% range mentioned in the procedure.
After computations where doen, it was revealed that the percent of water used in Trial
is 40%, and further added in Trial 2 ~ contrary to the discussed in procedure— resul-
ted to 42.58%
On the other hand, it was showed in the gathered data that the consistency of cement
paste is Il% and G'% for Trial 1 and 2, respectively. The first trial achieved the Standard
Consistency of cement paste, although this data is for the ronge of 26% to 33% wfc

The consistency of the cement paste sample is fim at 40% water content. This is
Qualified for the standardl consistency. This means that the cement used jn this experiment
for the concreting ond plastering purposes. However, due fo its high water content, the
strength oF the resulting concrete is expected fo be low as it foils to achieve enough dura-
bility to withstand greoter amount of forces-
