I. Objectives
At the end of 60-minute lesson in Science, the Grade 9 learners should be able to:
A. Describe what is photosynthesis and Cellular respiration;
B. Differentiate the phenomena of photosynthesis and cellular respiration ; and
C. Illustrate the relationship between Photosynthesis and Carbon dioxide.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
B. References: DepEd. Science 9 Learner’s Material.2014.
C. Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, chart, pictures,
D. Value: In this lesson, the students will gain an in-depth understanding about photosynthesis
and cellular respiration and their important functions in all living organisms.
III. Methodology/Procedure
TEACHER ACTIVITY LEARNER ACTIVITY
A. Preparation
1. Daily Routines
May we all rise for a prayer. (Class prays.)
Amen! Amen!
Good morning, Grade 9! Good morning, too,
ma’am!
Please sit down.
Thank you, ma’am.
2. Review
(Species extinction in the environment)
The answer is
________.
The answer is
________.
Let us see how well you remember our past lesson. I have an
activity here and I would like you to answer it.
Will you do the first one, _________?
Very good!
The second one, ________.
That’s right!
(Calls on other learners to answer.)
You have done well!
3. Motivation *Indicate what

B. Presentation
What comes into your mind when you hear the word
photosynthesis and cellular respiration? the chemical process
that uses sun as
Very good! energy while
respiration is a
Do you have any idea on how living organisms obtain energy? process that undergo
breathing.
Nice answer
Through absorbing
On this lesson, you will go through deeper understanding on how nutrients from the
and where is energy obtain and how photosynthesis and cellular food we eat
respiration functions.
What is photosynthesis? Basically photosynthesis pertains
to a process of converting sun’s energy into chemical
energy in the form of sugar.
Photo means light and synthesis means production
It occurs in plants, some photosynthetic bacteria and
algae
Autotrophs- capable of making their own food
Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast, an
organelle containing the pigment chlorophyll that absorbs
light.
Photosynthesis involves carbon dioxide and water
reacting with light energy to produce sugar and oxygen.
6CO2+6H2O+LIGHT→C6H12O6+6O2+ENERGY
Photosynthesis has two stages
-light dependent
Requires photons from light
Takes place in between thylakoids
Uses light and water to produce oxygen and 2 energy
carrying molecule.
a. ATP-energy currency of the cell
b. NADPH- energy carrying molecule that is needed in
the next stage which is the light independent reaction
-light independent( Calvin cycle)
Does not require light
Takes place in stroma still in inside of the chloroplast
Uses carbon dioxide and NADPH to produce sugar
CELLULAR RESPIRATION- process of breaking down complex
molecules such as sugar to release energy in the form of ATP.
Occurs in all living things
Takes place in mitochondria the powerhouse of the cell
It involves sugar and oxygen reacting to produce carbon dioxide,
water and energy in the form of ATP.
C6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2O+energy (ATP)
Stages of cellular respiration
-glycolysis
-pyruvate processing/oxidation
-Kreb cycle/ citric acid cycle
-Electron transport chain

photosynthetic bacteria
Sun’s energy is converted into Sugar is broken down to

C. Comparison and Abstraction
(The content and skill are being discussed and focused on *Indicate what
thoroughly. Art of questioning is fully utilized, with three or more learners will say and
pivotal questions.) do.
D. Generalization
*Ask a high level question that will help learners
synthesize/generalize what they learned. *Learners to state
the synthesis or
generalization.
E. Application
*Give oral or written exercises, can be individual or group
activity.) *Indicate what
*Infusion of value or integration of culture is done here. learners will say or
do.
IV. Evaluation (Congruent to the objectives, objective type is preferred; if performance, provide
rubrics.)
V. Assignment/Agreement (short, ensures continuity of learning)
