Class 11 Maths ch-5 Notes

The document discusses linear inequalities in one and two variables. It provides examples of solving linear inequalities algebraically and graphing the solutions. It also includes an example problem about finding the minimum length of the shortest side of a triangle given information about the lengths of its sides.

Class 11
Mathematics
Unit: LINEAR INEQUALITIES

★Inequalities:
The relationship between two values that are not equal
is defined by inequalities.

Numerical Inequalities :
Inequalities which do not contain any variable is called
numerical inequalities, e.g. 3 < 7, 2 ≥ -1, etc. Literal
Inequalities Inequalities which contains variables are
called literal inequalities e.g. x – y > 0, x > 5, etc.
• Linear Inequalities of One Variable:
Let a be non-zero real number and x be a variable.
Then, inequalities of the form ax + b > 0, ax + b < 0,
ax + b ≥ 0 and ax + b ≤ 0 are known as linear
inequalities in one variable.
Question – Solve the following inequality and graph the
solution.
1) 2(x-3) ≥ 3x – 4.
Solution – 2(x-3) ≥ 3x-4
2x–6 ≥ 3x–4

Subtract 3x on both sides, we get

2x–6–3x ≥ 3x–4–3x
– X-6 ≥ – 4
Add 6 on both sides, we get

X-6 + 6 ≥ – 4+6
X≥2
Multiply by negative on both sides
X≤-2
So, any real number lesser than or equal to -2 is a
solution of the given inequality.

1)(1/3)x + 2/3 < (5/6)x – 1.

Solution –
(1/3)x + 2/3 < (5/6)x – 1

(x/3) + 2/3 < (5x/6) – 1

Subtract 5x/6 and 2/3 on both sides.
(x/3) – (5x/6) < – 1 – (2/3)

(2x-5x)/6 < -5/3

Multiply by 6 on both sides.
-3x < -10
Dividing by -3 on both sides, we get
X > 10/3
So, the solution is any real number which are greater
than 10/3.

• Linear inequalities of Two Variables:-

Let a, b be non-zero real numbers and x, y be
variables. Then, inequation of the form ax + by < c,
ax + by > c, ax + by ≤ c and ax + by ≥ c are known
as linear inequalities in two variables x and y.
Solution of an Inequality:
The value(s) of the variable(s) which makes the
inequality a true statement is called its solutions. The
set of all solutions of an inequality is called the
solution set of the inequality.

Ques: 2 Consider a triangle, the longest side of the

triangle is three times the shortest side. Third side of
the triangle is 3cm smaller than the longest side.
Parameter of the triangle is at least 61cm. What will
be the minimum length of the shortest side?

Ques: Solve graphically, 3x-6≥0

Ans: 3x-6≥0............. (1)

3x-6=0
X=2
Now, Put (0,0) in equation (1)

Therefore,

0-6≥0
0>6
0>6 is not possible
Therefore graphical representation,
