Sampling and Quantization

The document discusses sampling and quantization of analog signals including determining the Fourier transform of sampled signals, reconstructing signals from samples using low-pass filtering, and calculating quantization noise from analog to digital conversion. It contains three exercises: the first addresses sampling rate effects on signal reconstruction, the second involves sampling and reconstructing a signal with impulse components, and the third calculates quantization step size, noise powers, and their ratio for a 16-bit analog to digital converter.

D.W n°2: Sampling and Quantization

Exercise 01:

Consider the analog signal defined by 𝒙(𝒕) = 𝑨. 𝒄𝒐𝒔(𝟐𝝅𝒇𝟎 𝒕), where 𝒇𝟎 = 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝑯𝒛 and A fixed
amplitude. This signal is ideally sampled at the frequency 𝑭𝒆 .

1) Determine 𝒙𝒆 (𝒕), 𝑿(𝒇) Fourier transform of 𝒙(𝒕) and 𝑿𝒆 (𝒇) Fourier transform of 𝒙𝒆 (𝒕).
2) Plot 𝑿𝒆 (𝒇) when 𝑭𝒆 = 𝟑 𝑲𝑯𝒛 and 𝑭𝒆 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝑯𝒛 (𝑓𝑜𝑟 ∶ −𝟐 ≤ 𝒌 ≤ 𝟐).
3) We wish to restore the original signal 𝒙(𝒕) from its samples (𝒙𝒓 (𝒕) = 𝒙𝒆 (𝒕) ∗ 𝒉(𝒕)) using a
𝑭𝒆
low pass filter with a cutoff frequency𝒇𝒄 = , that is to say of transmittance 𝑯(𝒇) =

𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕 (𝑭 ), with:
𝑭𝒆 𝒆

𝟏 𝑭𝒆 𝑭𝒆
𝒔𝒊 − ≤𝒇≤
𝑯(𝒇) = {𝑭𝒆 𝟐 𝟐
𝟎 𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒓𝒔
Give the expression for 𝒙𝒓 (𝒕) in the two cases 𝑭𝒆 = 𝟑 𝑲𝑯𝒛 and 𝑭𝒆 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝑯𝒛. Comment
on the results obtained.
Exercise 02:

Consider a signal 𝒙(𝒕) = 𝒂(𝒕) + 𝒃(𝒕), whose spectrum 𝑿(𝒇) is represented in Figure 1. The signal
𝒂(𝒕) is an aperiodic signal of finite energy whose spectrum corresponds to the continuous part of
𝑿(𝒇) (bounded support spectrum [−𝒇𝟎 , 𝒇𝟎 ]).

Fig. 1 – Spectre de 𝑥(𝑡).

1) Give the expression for 𝒃(𝒕).

2) We ideally sample 𝒙(𝒕) at the frequency 𝑭𝒆 = 𝟑𝒇𝟎 .

a) Represent the spectrum of the sampled signal 𝑿𝒆 (𝒇).
b) Represent the spectrum 𝑿𝒓 (𝒇) of the reconstructed signal 𝒙𝒓 (𝒕) = 𝒙𝒆 (𝒕) ∗ 𝒉(𝒕),
𝑭𝒆 𝟑𝒇𝟎
obtained by low pass filtering with cutoff frequency 𝒇𝒄 = = , with:

𝟏 𝒇 𝒊𝒇 − ≤𝒇≤
𝑯(𝒇) = 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕 ( ) = {𝑭𝒆 𝟐 𝟐

c) Express 𝒙𝒓 (𝒕) as a function of 𝒂(𝒕). Briefly explain what happened.

Exercise 03 :

A sinusoidal signal of 6V amplitude and digitize using a 16-bit A/D converter. Knowing that it works
between ± 10 V, calculate:

1. Its step of quantization;

2. Signal and quantization noise powers;
3. Deduce the signal/quantization noise ratio (𝑺⁄𝑩𝒒 )).
