ASSESSMENT IN LEARNING 2:
WHAT ARE THE THREE TYPES OF ASSESSMENT?
DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
1).Diagnostic assessment-
this is a form of pre- assessment that allows a teacher to determine individual student’s prior
knowledge including misconception before instruction.in short, it is primarily used to diagnose
what student already know and don’t yet know in order to guide instruction.
when we think about educational measurement, each assessment is designed for specific time
and purpose. When an assessment happens before the learning activity, these are called
diagnostic because the result can be used to diagnostic problem areas to focus on during the
teaching to come.in generally, educators used these type of assessment to identify what student
have yet to learn, diagnose any gaps in learning that will impede progress towards current
learning objectives, or uncover any strengths that can be encouraged.
2). Formative assessment-
when assessment happens during the learning process, these are called formative because the
result can be used to inform what to do next for individual or groups of students as learning is
occurring.
in formative assessment, teachers monitor student learning to get ongoing feedback to improve
their teaching and for student to improve their learning. And also in formative assessment student
are helped to identify their strengths and weaknesses and target arears that need work. Their
primarily purpose is to inform teachers about how their student are progressing, where gaps
exists in students’ learning, and how their instruction needs to be adjusted to improve student
learning, possibly by slowing down the pace repeating instruction or challenging some student
with new and potentially more difficult tasks.
3). Summative assessment –
this is used to evaluate student learning at the end of a defined instructional period. While
formative assessment if referred to as assessment for learning, summative assessment is referred
to as assessment of learning.
when assessment happen after the learning the learning activity, these are called summative
because the results are summation of learning that has occurred.
The traditional and authentic assessment
Traditional assessment-
traditional assessment includes the paper- and pencil test. Paper- and pencil test are either the
selected- response type or constructed response. These assessment are easy to grade, but only test
isolated application, facts, or memorized data at lower-level thinking skills.
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
is the measurement of “intellectual accomplishment that are worthwhile, significance, and
meaningful” as contrasted with multiple choice test. the term authentic assessment was coined by
wiggins (1993) a leading proponent of reform in testing.
Assessment is term because students’ knowledge and skills are assessed in a context that
approximate the real world of real life as closely as possible. The assessment requires student
performance that models realistic encounters in life in contrast to taking a written tests an essay.
that is why authentic assessment is likewise called performance assessment. It is also known as
non-traditional assessment and alternative assessment.

WHAT IS THE SUMMATIVE EVALUATION?
Is a type of evaluation that occurs at the end of a learning period or
program. It assesses student learning and whether they have met the
