In the digital age, social media platforms and online communities have become
integral parts of our daily lives, offering unprecedented opportunities for connection,
self-expression, and information sharing. However, they also present challenges in
navigating the fine line between authenticity and artifice, reality and illusion.
As a "Friend of Fake," one may find themselves caught up in the allure of curated
online personas, where authenticity takes a backseat to likes, followers, and validation.
In the pursuit of portraying an idealized version of oneself, individuals may resort to
embellishments, filters, and exaggerated portrayals, sacrificing genuine connection and
vulnerability in the process.
Moreover, the proliferation of fake news, misinformation, and algorithmic echo
chambers in the digital landscape further complicates the quest for authenticity and
truth. As information becomes increasingly fragmented and polarized, distinguishing fact
from fiction becomes a daunting task, leading to skepticism, cynicism, and mistrust.
In the realm of relationships, the rise of online dating, virtual friendships, and digital
communication tools has reshaped the dynamics of human connection, blurring the
boundaries between the virtual and the real.
Activity 3.6: Social Media
How young is too young for social media? At what age should a person be allowed to
use social media? Defend your answer.
The suitable age for social media usage can differ based on various factors,
including a child's level of maturity. Nonetheless, experts typically concur that children
should be at least 13 years old before they begin using social media platforms. This age
limit aligns with the minimum age requirement established by most social media
platforms. It's crucial to remember that even when children are permitted to use social
media, their activity should be supervised to guarantee their online safety. Parents
should also make an effort to inform their children about the potential dangers and
advantages of using social media.
Activity 3.7: SNS Terms & Condition
Read the policies/terms & condition of at least two (2) Social Networking Sites and
discuss briefly how that site treat your personal details once submitted for registration.
Facebook
• Facebook collects a range of personal information from users during the
registration process, including basic details such as name, email address, date of birth,
and gender. Additionally, Facebook tracks users' interactions on the platform, such as
posts, likes, comments, and messages.
• Facebook may share user data with third-party partners for advertising and
analytics purposes. These partners may include advertisers, marketers, and
researchers who work with Facebook to analyze trends, measure the effectiveness of
campaigns, and gain insights into user behavior. However, it's important to note that
Facebook typically anonymizes and aggregates data before sharing it with third parties
to protect user privacy.
• These features and tools provided by Facebook aim to give users greater
control over their personal information and privacy. It's important for users to regularly
review and adjust their privacy settings according to their preferences and to make use
of the available tools to manage their data effectively.
Twitter
• Twitter's Privacy Policy outlines how the platform collects, uses, and shares
users' personal information. During registration, users are required to provide basic
information such as name, email address, and phone number. Twitter also collects data
on users' tweets, likes, retweets, and interactions with other users.
• Twitter uses this information to personalize user experiences, provide
relevant content and recommendations, and improve its services. It may also share data
with third-party partners for advertising and analytics purposes.
• Users have control over their privacy settings and can adjust who can see
their tweets, profile information, and activity on the platform. Twitter also provides tools
for users to download a copy of their data and deactivate their account if desired.
In summary, both Facebook and Twitter collect users' personal details upon
registration and use this information to personalize user experiences, provide targeted
advertising, and improve their services. However, they also offer users control over their
privacy settings and provide tools for managing and protecting their personal
information.
