WORK IMMERSION: REAL WORLD
EXPERIENCE OF SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS
Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the study
Immersion is the act of fully submerging something within another. This can be
done through books, movies, or video games; however the term is most frequently used
in this context when referring to video games. Virtual reality immersion is the concept of
the user’s emotional reaction to the virtual world, in terms of feeling as if they are
literally part of the virtual world. It is the perception of being physically present in a non-
physical world. In the same vein, an immersive digital environment is a scene or “world”
that a player can immerse themselves within. It is artificial, interactive, and computer-
created and mostly thought to be synonymous with virtual reality.
According to Valdez (2010), the curriculum may continue to revisit periodically to
align the skills needed by the industry. The curriculum should be designed to prepare
the graduates and demonstrate the core competencies expected of them in the
workplace. On-the-job training is the best method as it is economical, simple, and
effective and everybody can do it doesn't need wide-ranging budget ,complex training
courses, devoted training staffs or absence from the workplace. Its effectiveness can be
significantly enhanced by applying a methodical approach based on the UKEssay.
Rendering to this, “Importantly, each on-the-job model has its own merits and
weaknesses but they all serve the same purpose of providing the trainees with the
opportunity to “practice and learn by doing”, they added. UkEssays’ researchers relate
this to Confucius’ perception; “if all I do is hear, I will forget. If I hear and see, I will
remember. If I hear, see and do, I will understand
Work immersion provides Senior High School learners with opportunities to
become familiar with the workplace, simulate employment, and to apply their
competencies in areas of specialization or applied subjects in actual work environment
to prepare learners for all curriculum exits.
Work immersion will assist in the learners' development of life and career skills
and will position them to choose between post-secondary education and employment.
Through establishing partnerships, DepEd expects that the Partner Institutions would
give students opportunities for job immersion, real-world experience, and access to
more resources for learning. It seeks to help students understand the significance and
practical application of the theories and principles they have acquired in school, improve
their technical knowledge and skills, hone their interpersonal and communication skills,
and cultivate positive work habits and attitudes.
Theoretical Framework of the study
This work immersion experienced is anchored of DepEd The Department of
Education (DepEd) issues the enclosed Guidelines for Work Immersion as basis for the
implementation of work immersion in all Senior High Schools (SHSs). Work Immersion
is a key feature of your SHS Curriculum. It can be conducted in different ways
depending on the purposes and needs of learners. Enclosed are the documents
pertinent to its implementation. These guidelines will take effect starting School Year
2017-2018 for all SHSs. These guidelines will remain in force and in effect for the
duration of the program, unless sooner repealed, amended, or rescinded. All existing

According to Henry (2011) having the immersion was really a good start to
experience how does it feel to be in a workplace. These students provide unique
insights into what it’s like to get hands on experience through full time employment in a
technology-driven global work environment. One reason many of us go to college is to
learn the knowledge necessary to acquire a job and pursue a career after we graduate.
We aim to gain the skills that we will need to work in an industry. This is what really sold
me on the GET experience. I was able to go to work for 40 hours a week, get real,
hands on knowledge of applications, development, and corporate culture, as well as
earn credit towards my major. The best part was that they treated me like a full time
employee, not an intern. This is what really sold me on the GET experience. I was able

development, and corporate culture, as well as earn credit towards my major. The best

According to Brady (2014) immersion is important let me throw out the year 1986.
Feel free to picture your big hair and acid-washed jeans as you sat in Spanish, French,
German, or Latin class. Now try to remember the class itself. Most likely, it was an
uninspiring combination of translating boring sentences out of a textbook, endless rote
verb conjugations taken out of any meaningful context, and, if you were lucky, the
occasional filmstrip of some far away land. Your confidence would soar after receiving
an ‘A’ in Spanish IV Honors and being elected Vice President of the Spanish National
Honor Society. Then, on your first visit to a Spanish-speaking country, you were served
a generous dose of humble pie. Despite all your exemplary grades and accolades, you
found yourself unable to understand or say even the most basic of things. Maybe this
was only my high school language experience, but I doubt it! Thankfully, like those acid-
washed jeans, the “memorize and translate” style of language learning is a thing of the
past. Today’s language classes are built around the concept of immersion.
According to the study of Elnaga and Imran (2013) training is a necessity in the
workplace. Without it, employees don't have a firm grasp on their responsibilities or
duties .Employee training refers to programs that provide workers with information, new
skills, or professional development opportunities. Employee is a blood stream of any
business. The accomplishment or disaster of the firm depends on its employee
performance. Hence, top management realized the importance of investing in training
and development for the sake of improving employee performance. This conceptual
paper aimed at studying the effect of training on employee performance and to provide
suggestion as to how firm can improve its employee performance through effective
training programs.
According to Gupta (2003), OJT enables the trainee learns on the actual machine
in use and in the real environment of the job. Trainee feels the actual job and therefore
better motivated to learn and there is no problem in transfer of training skills to the job.
The method is also very economical because no additional space, equipment,
personnel or other facilities are required for training skills to the job. The method is also
very economical because no additional space, equipment, personnel or other facilities
are required for training. Also trainee learns the rules, regulations and procedures by
observing their day to day applications. It is also a more suitable method for teaching
knowledge and skills which can be acquired through personal observing their day to day
applications. It is also a more suitable method for teaching knowledge and skills which
can be acquired through personal observation in a relatively short time period. It is
widely used for unskilled and semi-skilled jobs egg. Clerical and sales jobs. Moreover, it
enables supervisors take an active part in training their subordinates.
According to Goldstein & Ford (2002) training is defined as the systematic
acquisition of skills, mies, concepts or attitudes that result in improved performance in
another environment Training is a learning experience in that it seeks a relatively
permanent change in an individual that will improve the ability to perform the job.
Training can involve the changing of skills, knowledge, attitudes or behavior. This
means that changing what employees know, how they work, their attitudes towards their
work or their interaction with their coworkers or supervisors.Likewise, training is an
ongoing and continuous process meet and adapt changes effectively and quickly. It’s an
attempt to improve current and future performance by increasing an employees’ ability
to perform throught learning, usually by changing and their attitude or increasing his
skills and knowledge (Verma 2009).Byars & Rue, (2004) found the training is a learning
process that involves acquisition of skills, concept, rules or attitude to enhance the
performance of employees.Generally, the new employees, manager has the primary
responsibility for job training, sometimes this is delegated to senior employee in the
department.Initial training can have significant influence.
According to Ronda (2018) The Department of Education (DepEd) is banking on
the “strong partnerships” it has forged with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (PCCI) and other industry groups as the Grade 12 students under the K-12
basic education curriculum take their work immersion course requirement. Work
immersion, according to the DepEd, is a key subject under the Senior High School
curriculum that may be conducted in different ways and time frame as needed by SHS
learners. The subject provides learners opportunities to familiarize themselves with the
workplace; to simulate employment, and to apply their competencies in areas of
specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environment.

Methodology
Design
This research study used the Direct observation method design. The observation
method is the most commonly used technique especially in research studies connecting
to behavioral sciences. In such a way all of us observe things around us, but this sort of
observation is not clinical observation. Observation becomes a scientific tool and the
approach of data collection for the researcher, when it serves a formulated research
function, is methodically prepared and taped and goes through checks and controls on
validity and reliability. Under the observation approach, the information is looked for by
method of investigator's own direct observation without asking from the respondent.
Environment
This study will be conducted at the San Fernando Municipal Fire Station from the
category fire Brigade in San Fernando ,Cebu. The only fire station of San Fernando
which is near at the supermarket. The Work Immersion started on February 13,2023
and ended on February 24,2023
Instruments
In this study the researchers use the observation, review and document
analysis.
Through observation, the researcher can gain a first-hand experience of how
operates. They can observe how personnel respond to emergencies, how they use
equipment and tools, and how they interact with the public. This can provide valuable
insights into the day-to-day operations and help the researcher understand the
organization's strengths and weaknesses.
Interviews with personnel can provide valuable insights into their experiences
and perspectives. Through interviews, the researcher can gain a deeper understanding
of the challenges that personnel encounter in their work, as well as the skills and
knowledge required to do their job effectively. Additionally, interviews with leadership
can provide insights into the organization's goals, strategies, and priorities.
Document analysis involves reviewing and analyzing documents related to
BFP, such as incident reports, training manuals, and policy documents. This can provide
valuable insights into the organization's history, operations, and decision-making
processes. Additionally, document analysis can help the researcher identify areas where
improvements can be made, such as training programs or communication strategies.
Overall, by using observation, interview, and document analysis, the researcher can
gain a comprehensive understanding of BFP and its operations. This can help identify
areas where improvements can be made, as well as inform future policy and decision-
making processes.

PROFILE OF THE IMMERSIONIST AND THE ESTABLISHMENT
This data is composed of the work immersion logbook, establishment chart,
number of department emloyees, vision and mission, which are the important
component of the profile of the immersionist and the establishment in conducting this
study.
Work Immersion Logbook
The Student Immersion Logbook is divided into three (3) parts. Part 1 includes
information on your profile, your host employer and your school. It also contains
learning agreement and indemnity form that you will sign to be part of this immersion
program. Part 2 Includes information on the roles of your school, your employer and
yourself during immersion placement. It also contains your preparation checklist for
work immersion placement, daily journal and evaluate your work immersion. Lastly, Part
3 includes two sections which need to be completed by your host employer at the end of
your work immersion placement. You need to make sure that both sections in this part
are completed before you leave the workplace.
Establishment Chart and Number of Employees
This organization's structure is shown in this figure, along with the relationships
and relative ranks of its many parts and positions. The department, which consists of 12
Fire officers, is divided into two shifts, A and B, which alternate duty every two weeks.
The shift B is granted time to take a rest for two weeks while shift A is working,
especially those who live far from the workplace.
Vision and Mission
The BFP’s philosophy is “We serve, so that others may live”. As a public safety
agency, their organization adheres to the doctrine of life preservation in the event of
emergency, disaster, and calamity. The vision statement aspires and expresses their
plan or “Vision” for the future and potential impact on the world. While their mission
statement declares the purpose of their organization that serves to it’s people.

Day 3, They discussed about fire extinguisher and how to use it correctly and after we
had a short test. Day 4, they discussed about important of the fire exit drills and also
what we are doing to do in that situation. Day5,I was instructed to encode the different
department stores and the information. Day 6,our mentor instruct us how to wear PPE
properly and they given the activity to speed up wearing PPE(Personal Protective
Equipment). Day7, they discussed about different kind of hose and we given a activity of
doing throwing hose in various way and how to handle it correctly and after we were
instructed to encode. Day8,they discussed about types of rope rescue and taught us
what are the proper rescue of people when they are in tragedy. Day9,I observed that
they are very busy doing their jobs. Lastly, on day 10,I observed that every Friday was
there cleaning operation and we arranged the things and we helping each other to finish
quickly.I have learned from day 1 to 10, during my work experience at the Bureau of
Fire Protection,I was fortunate enough to experience and learn new things and I learn
about safety protocols that must be followed in different types of emergencies, such as
hazardous material spills and natural disaster.Additionaly, I learned that safety protocols
must put in place to ensure that fire fighter and properly trained and prepared for any
situation.
Mandatory Actions
The fact that the fire station staff instructed the pupils on extinguishment
methods, chain reactions, inhibition, and correct PPE usage are the most crucial
aspects in this passage. They also instructed them on BFP discipline rules, fire
evacuation drills, coding stores, appropriate PPE wear, different types of hose, rope
rescue techniques, and cleaning procedures. On their final day, they noticed that only a
few others had arrived; as a result, they assisted one another in finishing rapidly.
Immersion Statements
Immersion is a powerful method of learning that involves deep and
comprehensive engagement with a subject or language through experiential and real-
world learning. Immersion goes beyond traditional classroom learning and involves
actively experiencing and participating in the subject matter in a hands-on, experiential
way. This type of learning allows individuals to gain a deeper understanding of a subject
and develop practical skills that can be applied in real-life situations.
One of the key benefits of immersion is that it allows learners to develop a more
comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the subject matter. By actively engaging
with the subject in real-world contexts, learners are able to gain a deeper appreciation
of its complexities and subtleties, and to explore different perspectives and approaches.
This type of learning can be particularly effective in areas such as language learning,
where immersion in the language and culture is essential to develop fluency and a deep
understanding of the language.Another benefit of immersion is that it promotes the
development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Immersion requires learners
to actively engage with the subject matter and to apply their knowledge and skills in
real-world contexts. This process encourages learners to think critically, analyze
information, and develop creative solutions to problems. It also promotes the
development of communication and interpersonal skills, as learners are required to
interact with others in real-life situations.
To conclude, immersion is a powerful method of learning that involves deep and
comprehensive engagement with a subject or language through experiential and real-
world learning. Immersion allows learners to develop a more comprehensive and
nuanced understanding of the subject matter, while promoting the development of
critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills. Immersion
can be particularly effective in areas such as language learning, where immersion in the
language and culture is essential to develop fluency and a deep understanding of the
language.

As an immersionist in the Bureau of Fire Protection, you would likely undergo
extensive training and participate in various activities to gain firsthand experience in
firefighting and rescue operations. Some potential experiences you might encounter as
an immersionist in the BFP could include:
As sa BFP immersionist, you may be involved in actual firefighting operations, which
could include responding to trowing hose, rope rescue, and other types of fires. You
may be responsible for operating firefighting equipment, using fire suppression
techniques, and coordinating with other team members to extinguish fires and protect
life and property. Rescue operations: BFP immersionists may also participate in rescue
operations, such as extricating individuals from collapsed buildings, performing water
rescues, and responding to other emergency situations. This could involve using
specialized tools and equipment, such as ropes, harnesses, cutting tools, and medical
equipment, to safely extract individuals in distress. Hazardous materials incidents: BFP
immersionists may also encounter hazardous materials incidents, such as chemical
spills or leaks, and may be trained to identify and mitigate the risks associated with
these incidents. This could involve using protective gear, monitoring equipment, and
decontamination procedures to safely manage hazardous materials incidents.
Emergency medical services: BFP immersionists may also be trained in emergency
medical services (EMS) and provide basic life support (BLS) or advanced life support
(ALS) care to individuals in need. This could include administering first aid, performing
CPR, and using medical equipment to stabilize and transport patients to medical
facilities. Community outreach and education: BFP immersionists may also engage in
community outreach and education programs to raise awareness about fire safety,
conduct fire drills, and provide training to schools, businesses, and other organizations.
This could involve public speaking, teaching, and organizing events to promote fire
prevention and safety. Teamwork and camaraderie: As a BFP immersionist, you would
likely work closely with other members of the BFP and other emergency response
agencies, fostering a sense of teamwork and camaraderie. You may participate in joint
training exercises, drills, and actual emergency responses, building strong bonds with
your fellow firefighters and emergency responders. Stressful and challenging situations:
Firefighting and rescue operations can be physically demanding, mentally challenging,
and emotionally taxing, as immersionists play a crucial role in protecting lives, property,
and the community.
