1 Irrigation Engineering Report
1.1. Introduction
1.1.1. Background
The entire regional agriculture sector is almost dependent on rain-fed farming. Consequently, the
ill effects of drought and unreliability of rainfall have seriously hindered the agricultural
development. These ill effects of drought, unreliability of rainfall and rapid increase in the
country’s population have made the efficient use of irrigation water vitally important,
particularly, where the greatest potential for decreasing food deficiency and poverty is often
found in irrigated areas.
Due to the drought and unreliability of rainfall, Fadis Woreda is one of the chronically food in-
secured districts in the region. Both crop & Livestock production are not able to support the
food demand of the community & hence dependent on food aid. Since last thirty years, the
numbers of people affected by shortage of food show an increasing trend, which demands a
development intervention of the Zonal government. In this regard, irrigation based integrated
development is found the best alternative to reverse this trend and to bring radical transformation
in the community tradition.
Accordingly,Ethiopian Catholic Church Social & Development Commision Branch Office Of
Harar which is non-governmental Organization has decided to intervene in the situation, through
the Goha small scale Irrigation project Based Integrated Development Project (SSIBIDP), that
aimed to the improvement of agricultural production, with a view to realize the objectives of
food self-sufficiency, food security and hence improvement of social facilities. The basin is
characterized by poverty, instability, rapid population growth and environmental degradation.
Water development could enhance energy availability, food production, transportation, industrial
development, environmental conservation and other related development activities in the region.
Goha Irrigation Development Project is one such measure to provide irrigation to more than
259.36 ha of cultivable land in Qufa Bobasa and Nagaya Bobasa PA.
The project is located in small river stream which discharge the water from spring from the

ground vertically, as a discharge of the spring is 23.68 l/s. The supplies in the main canal will be
regulated by constructing a head regulator on the right and left inlet of canals. With the allocated
discharge of 0.0014 cumecs and distribute to the command area which is about 259.36 ha is
expected to be irrigated
1.2. General
An irrigation main canal takes its supplies from a Spring. To divert the water from the spring
outlet in to the canal, it is necessary to construct in let structure for canals at the outlet of the
spring and the Head Regulator for the off taking channel. Permanent works comprising Spring is
constructed for important head works of canal system. The location of the head work and the
actual site is Suitabile with the following considerations.
It elevation is higher than the command area.
The canal alignment should enable suitable command without excessive excavation.
Suitability of canal alignments to irrigate the command area
. Availability of construction materials like, masonry stone and aggregate at distance of about
5km from the project site in the PA.
1.3. Description of the Project Area

1.4. Objectives of the Study
1.4.1. Major Objective
To make sustainable the rain-fed crop production and make extra production in the dry season
possible for 259.36 ha of land through irrigation
This objective is to be realized by constructing Canal structures in to the both sides of the stream
by diverting the spring flow
1.4.2. Specific Objectives
Other benefits that can be expected to appear with the launching of the project are:
o Improved local nutrition/food security gains;
o Improved management of scarce natural resources (land and water);
o Resilience against drought risk;
o Rationale for erosion control and watershed management;
o Rationale for the intensification and modernization of small-holder agriculture and rural
lifestyles.
The engineering study and design enables the realization of the project by the provision of
engineering structures that will allow the appropriate abstraction of the spring water for delivery
in to the identified irrigation fields of the study area. Hence, this engineering design is
specifically targeted to:
Analyze hydrologic requirements of the project and engineering structures;
The formulation of sound and stable structure, with necessary provisions that allow safe, easy
and low-maintenance operation in the service life of the project; Develop working drawings;
Estimation of construction costs. Scope of the Study Establish design criteria for irrigations
structures to be approved by the client and to be used in the final design stage,
Design proper irrigation system compatible with local conditions and management capabilities,
Establish flood protection measures for the command area and canal structures and design the
respective drainage system accordingly,

Planning and layout of the irrigation system, which include irrigation canals, drainage channels,
inspection roads and alignments, canal spacing, canal length, location of structures, and water
profiles along canal and drains at specified reaches, which is most economical easily manageable
and aligned with topographic feature and geological investigation.
Determination and estimation of water application conveyance and other losses and irrigation
efficiencies and consideration of those parameters in design steps.
Check and test hydraulic and structural designs of main canal considering total demand and the
required capacity and the base flow availability,
Prepare general plans and drawings for all irrigation infrastructure and irrigation systems
designs,
1.5. Methodology
The project area, about 259.36ha of land is surveyed and plotted in to 1:1000 taking from topo
maps surveying.
Lay out of main canal, secondary and tertiary canal are made in opposition to irrigation
structures like Road culvert, turn outs, supper passage, foot path, and division box are located
accordingly.
Foot paths are farm roads that run across the command area and along the canals to make the
mobilization in the farm Easier-Only sample (one from the many) canals or structures’ is
designed in steps (procedures). The rest are calculated using "EXCEL" computer program and
put in to tables. The tabulated elements are finally annexed to the document.
1.6. Drainage System Layout
The irrigation system layout for the project is prepared taking the following points into
consideration besides other factors.
A primary concern in the layout of the system is that it serves the purpose of conveying
and distributing water to the command area.
The excavation and earth fill volumes not be excessive, otherwise the construction costs
can be tremendous.
The selection of longitudinal bed slope is made taking into account the existing slopes of
the terrain, so as to minimize deviations in canal routing.

Curves in canals should not be too sharp.
The proposed irrigation system layout comprises two (2) main canal, eleven (11) secondary
canals and sixty-seven (67) tertiary canals in number as shown on the layout Drawings. The two
main canals run for most of its length parallel to the contours and several changes of direction
are necessary to follow the topography. they cross two main gullies, foot paths and supper
passages. The two main canal is masonry lined.

The capacity of the three secondary canals is determined by multiplying the irrigable area under
specified canal the same as main canals. The secondary canals are designed separately as the slope is
very steep and to treat the high velocity before supplying to the tertiary canal. They are designed to
be constructed from mortared stone pitching of trapezoidal sections. The design principle is the same

to cope up with the relatively steeper gradient. Figure 9 below shows a typical field canal x-
section. As much as possible field canals shall be made in fill in order to easily irrigate the
adjacent command area. As can be seen from the layout, majority of the filed canals can be used
to irrigate both sides of the command area depending on the condition of the individual plots of
land owned by individual farmers.
