Lesson Idea Name: Modeling Plant Cells
Grade Level/Content Area: 5th grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: (List the number and the verbiage for the standard.)
S5L3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the parts of plant and
animal cells.
b. Develop a model to identify and label parts of a plant cell (membrane, wall, cytoplasm,
nucleus, chloroplasts) and of an animal cell (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus).
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: Use the What would you like students to know and be
link to guide you to suggested student standards able to do by the end of this lesson: (Use the
which come from the ISTE Student Standards standard(s) to define this statement.)

Empowered Learner 1d: Students is technology
to seek feedback that informs and improves their
practice and demonstrates their learning in a
variety of ways.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?
Students will identify and label parts of a plant cells. Students will obtain information about plant
cells and communicate information about the parts of the cell.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.
X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.
☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:
Students will begin by watching and educational video about plant cells and their parts.
https://safeshare.tv/x/ss65e743b460369#
Students will go to https://wordwall.net/en-us/community/plant-cell-matching and select at least 3
games to play.
After playing the games students will fill out the google forms to assess their knowledge.

The lesson will end with students posting on the Padlet, one thing they learned, one thing they like
and what game they would recommend with the link.

Managing student learning:
The selection of games from WordWall makes this lesson more active because students are involved
in the choices of the lesson. Students can be recommended to play a variety of games but hey can
also play the games that focus on the parts of the learning goals that they are struggling with.
Students can have more practice labeling the parts of a cell if they already know what is the purpose
of each part. The students are focused on the big picture of knowing the parts of a plant cell and
their purpose and less on 1 particular assignment that might not work for every student.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Reflect upon the learning activities you have planned for the
students. How will the experience support Engagement, Representation and/or Action and
Expression components of UDL framework?
Engagement: students have the choice of games to play and the access to information.
Representation: Lesson starts with a video as one means of information. The games have a choice of
auditory information or visual information that can be read or watched.
Action & Expression: assessment is on google forms with a variety of question type. The Padlet
allows for student to give feedback on the lesson and express the likes and dislikes.
Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, do you believe this tool will help students build
understanding in a way they could not do with traditional tools? Why or why not? What do you look
forward to implementing the most in this lesson? Why?
Yes, the Padlet allows for students to communicate and collaborate by responding to each other’s
opinions on the lessons. If a student like a game so much they can put the link in the Padlet and now
all of the students have access to the recommended can. If this was a tradition paper assignment all
of the students would have been completing the same task which limits their exposure to more
information.
