Percussion Curriculum
The percussion curriculum is designed to present a relevant sequence of study of all the percussion
instruments. Students enrolled in private lessons are expected to improve their skills and ability to use
their instrument as a means of musical expression in both solo and ensemble performance situations.
The students will study the primary concert percussion instruments consisting of snare drum, mallets,
and timpani. Drum set, orchestral traps, jazz vibes, and ragtime xylophone will also be taught when the
student has a firm grasp on the primary percussion instruments.
Daily practice is essential in learning any instrument. The progress (or lack of progress) that you make
will depend entirely upon your practice habits and the amount of time you spend practicing. The
following guidelines are suggested minimums for daily practice.
LEVEL DAILY PRACTICE TIME
Beginner, Junior High School 30-60 minutes
High School, Adult 45 minutes and up
College (non-majors) 2-3 hours
College Music Majors 4-7 hours
Material requirements are the (minimum) essential basic sticks and mallets for the serious percussionist.
You may choose from makes and models of sticks suggested in this syllabus or other sticks of
comparable quality. The lists are merely a start to your percussion arsenal. You are not required to
purchase all of the material requirements at once, but gradually throughout your student years. Your
instrument and stick needs will vary depending on the compositions that you play. With the wide array
of tone colors available in stick and mallet choices, it is common to purchase a new pair of sticks or
mallets for each new composition you play.
Topics of study are simply techniques, methods, and styles of the art needed for a percussion student’s
growth and prosperity.
Solos for the most part are listed easy to difficult. You may choose from those listed or a solo of
comparable difficulty and significance. Once you have a solo at its peak performance, make a recording
of your performance for future use such as an audition CD/DVD.
Books are methodical and solo studies that are listed in graduated order from the beginning level to the
early college years. Your instructor will choose books based on your needs. Some books contain a
collection of solos.
Supplemental materials are not required but suggested for extra study that may be used in further
technical practice. Some of these materials also focus on styles of music (such as 20 th Century) that are
imperative to study; yet, time may not permit for regular instruction.
Excerpts are the primary way to compare you with your colleagues. The music that at first glance looks
easy to play is in fact very difficult to play perfectly (which must be done). Excerpt books are a good
source with which to start but you should get a copy of the actual part. In addition, get a copy of all of
the parts of all the other instruments if you can. Keep a clean copy with no markings and make another
1
copy that you will use and write notes and articulations. Keep them both in a file or music folder (do not
3-hole punch the music, you will 3-hold punch right through a note). Get at least 3 different recordings
of the composition (1 major American symphony less than 20 years ago, 1 major American symphony
40 years ago, and 1 European symphony). Note the tempi, style, balance, and technique of each
recording. Learn all of the music on the part, not just the popular excerpt. For auditions, mimic the first
listed symphony’s recording. To be “unique”, mimic the European symphony’s recording.
Additional percussion materials-Books are not required though highly suggested not only for the
serious percussionist but also for the aspiring musician.
