Diagnostic check answers


The tests and answers have been written by the authors. These may not fully reflect the
approach of Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Part 1: Non-fiction
Reading
1 Award 2 marks for any 2 correct answers: marine – sea;
threat – danger; carnivore – meat-eating; extinction – to die out.
2 Award 1 mark for any reasonable definition (e.g. Predators are animals or
people that hunt others).
3 Award 1 mark for: they can swim.
4 Award 1 mark for answering ‘True’ and ‘True’.
5 Award 1 mark for ‘calf’ and 1 mark for ‘calves’.
6 Award 1 mark for ‘pod’.
7 Award 1 mark for each answer:
 8, 28, 30
 Calf
8 Award 1 mark for the correct alphabetical order: pod, pollution, pool, porpoise
9 Award 1 mark for Arctic or Caribbean.
10 Award 1 mark for any reasonable answer: the text is organised into sections
with headings; the text is factual; it has an index.
11 Award 1 mark for ‘present tense’ and any relevant example, like:
A group of dolphins is called a pod.
12 Award 1 mark for any reasonable answer based on the text,
(e.g. control fishing and other human activities in the ocean).
