Introduction
What is a Computer Network?
A computer network is a group of
computers and the other peripheral devices
that are linked together for the purpose of
sharing data and resources.
Types of Networks:
Depending on the geographical area
covered, there are 5 types of networks:
Local Area Network (LAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Personal Area Network (PAN)
Campus Area Network (CAN)
Local Area Network (LAN):
In LAN, two or more computers and
peripheral devices are connected in a small
area, such as a room, or office building. In
LAN, computer terminals are physically
connected with wires. The data
transmission speed is faster than WAN. It
can be controlled and administered by a
single or an organisation. Home Wi Fi
networks and small business networks are
common examples of LANs.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN):
MAN is a larger network than LAN. It is
spread across a city. Since it covers an area
in a city, it is called Metropolitan Area
Network. The most common example of
MAN is the city cable network or branches
of a local bank in a city.
Wide Area Network (WAN):
This type of network connects two or more
computer located at distant places. They
are linked by communication facilities like
Tele-Communication or satellite signals. A
WAN consists of a number of inter-
connected LANs and MANs.. It can be a
public or private network. Wide Area
Networks are often set up with least tele-
communication lines. Usually, leased lines
are used by companies to connect
geographically distant offices. Some
common examples of WAN are: the
internet and telecom system.
Personal Area Network (PAN)
PAN is a computer that is mainly created
for an individual person. It is used for
communication among devices, such as
laptops, mobile phones, Personal Digital
Assistants, or smart phones. Personal area
network can either be wired or wireless. It
generally covers a range of about thirty
feet. you can use these networks to transfer
the files including emails, calendar
appointments, digital photos, and music.
One of the most common real-world
examples of a PAN is the connection
between a Bluetooth earpiece and a
smartphone.
Cluster Area Network (CAN):
CAN is also known as campus area
network. It is a network that consists of a
series of small LANs over a small
geographical area, such as a collage
campus. This network covers an area
smaller than MAN. Examples of such are
the networks at Googleplex and
Microsoft's campus
