Course Description, Objective & Prerequisites
This course provides a study of the fundamentals of process safety. It
includes toxicology, industrial hygiene, source models, fires and explosions,
hazard identification, risk assessment, accident investigations, and process
safety management.
❑ Course Main Objective:
✓ To provide fundamental tools which are used to design/manage/operate a
chemical plant safely
❑ Prerequisites:
✓ MATH 301 Probability and Statistics (basic concepts of probability )
✓ ENV 425 Mass Transfer Operations (principles of diffusion and mass
transfer process equipment)
Course Learning Objectives and Program Student’s Outcomes:
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
❑ Demonstrate appreciation of the importance of safety on-the-job
❑ Understand process safety engineering and loss prevention through the
history
❑ Evaluate hazards associated with a process facility
❑ Apply process-associated hazards’ identification, evaluation & analysis, and
control procedures.
Course addresses program students' outcomes: SO(1), SO(2), SO(4), & SO(7)
❑ SO(1): An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of
engineering, science, and mathematics
❑ SO(2): An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration
of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
❑ SO(4): An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make
informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic,
environmental, and societal contexts
❑ SO(7): An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

Grading
❑ Assignments (five) 15%
❑ Midterms (two) 35%
❑ Project 10%
❑ Final Exam 40%
❑ Attendance 0% (will be used in case of curving)
Notes
- No makeup for exams.
- Midterms and final exams are open-book for the textbook (hardcopy only)
- For midterms, students will get 40% of the mark of their worst quiz and
60% of the mark of the best one. For the rules of midterms, the student
cannot benefit from this rule if he/she did not attend one of the exams
without a official acceptable excuse.
- Note that in case of emergency (e.g., increase of COVID19 cases), grading
distribution may be changed by the sole will of the instructor. For example,
we may use only one midterm (for the whole 35%!!!). So, plan accordingly!
- Attendance will be tracked in lectures and tutorials (on campus or online)
after the first week. Students failing to attend 75% of lectures and tutorials
will not be allowed to take the final exam (except for official (accepted by
the instructor) excuses).
- To pass the course, you must attend final examination and pass it with at
least 35%.

Notes, cont’d
✓ There is tentatively 5 assignments (each due one week exactly from
notice). The best 4 assignments will be counted provided you submitted all
the assignments (the five) and your grade in each one is not less than 50%
✓ The assignments are due 11:59 pm on the due date
✓ The assignments will be submitted ONLINE on Google Classroom (not in an
email, not in a Whatsapp message,…, etc)
