Case Assignment Guidelines

(1) Students will be divided into groups to complete a case assignment involving a written report, in-class presentation, and questions about other groups' cases. (2) Each group must have a leader and contribute equally. The report should include a problem statement, solution, and analysis in APA style. (3) Presentations should be 10-12 minutes with a slide deck, and groups must answer other groups' questions. Deadlines and case schedule are provided in tables.

Case Assignment Guidelines

Guidelines: Case Report, Presentation, and Questions

Students will be divided into groups via Canvas. Each group will be assigned a case and

(1) write a report discussing the case, (2) present their analysis of the case during class, and (3)

submit case questions about the cases presented by other groups. Working in groups can be

challenging. However, research in teaching and learning in higher education shows that group

work can be especially beneficial for large classes and that groups assigned by the instructor tend

to perform better than self-selected groups.1

Each group must elect a group leader who should take initiative in delegating

responsibilities and ensuring that files are correctly uploaded to Canvas. (Only one file per

group. Everyone in the group will receive the same grade.) Although each group will have a

leader, the responsibility for ensuring equal participation in every aspect of the case assignment

lies with all the group members.

The case report must include the following three elements: (1) a statement of the major

problem or issue in the case, (2) an explanation of the main recommended solution for the

problem, and (3) a brief summary of the supporting analysis. The case presentation should last

between 10 and 12 minutes, and it should be accompanied by a slide-deck.

For the case report, follow the American Psychological Association (APA) style of

writing.2 The APA website has resources on writing style and grammar.3 Pay attention to these

APA guidelines closely to know how to format your paper, use of punctuation correctly, and

write in-text citations and references. The APA guidelines will also guide you with other

important aspects that might be needed when writing your report. The APA website also has an

annotated sample paper that you can use as a visual guide.4

There will be three exceptions that you should follow when formatting your paper. First,

a cover page is not needed. Do not include one. Second, the heading of your case report must be

aligned to the left margin and list (1) the course code and title, (2) name of the document (that is,

“case report”), (3) group number and individual names (only of those who contributed to the

assignment), and (4) date. Each of these items should be on a separate line and single spaced.

The title should follow this heading, and it should be centered. (You must come up with a title

for your case report. Do not title your report “case report.”) All these items should be in bold

letters. (For an example, see the heading in this document.) Third, do not include a page number

in the first page of your document.

The following are additional details that you need to follow when writing the case report:

1. The length of your report must be between 1200 and 1500 words (including the

heading).

2. Margins should be one inch all around and the paper size should be US letter.

3. Use Times New Roman font, size 12 (all text should be in black).

4. The main text should be double-spaced. The first line of each paragraph should

include an indentation of 0.5 inches.

5. Proofread your document before submitting it. Spell check features or other

software are great for typos, but do not correct for grammatical or writing style

errors. Learn to trust your own writing skills.

3

Your case report will rarely benefit from the use of subtitles to separate different sections

within your text. Instead, rely on good transitions and paragraph breaks. Moreover, your case

report should not require you to use citations. However, they should be there when appropriate.

For the case presentation, the entire group is responsible for discussing the major issues

of the case, preparing the presentation slides, and planning for the presentation. Group members

should be ready to answer questions about the case from the other students in the class. The

presentation slides must include a title slide with the group number and individual names. The

slide-deck must be uploaded to Canvas (in PDF format) prior to the beginning of the class when

the case will be discussed. Groups may use the following structure for the presentation and

slides-deck:

• introduction of the case, statement of the problem (1 minute),

• recommended solution for the problem (2 minutes),

• supporting analysis (6 minutes), and

• conclusion and takeaways (1 minute).

For the case questions, groups that are not presenting must submit 3 questions about the

case being discussed by other groups. Each group must submit their questions through Canvas

prior to the case discussion in class. The groups submitting questions are also responsible for

asking their questions in class to the presenting groups. To prepare these questions, groups

should meet on their own to discuss the case, come up with 3 questions to ask about the case, and

make a plan for submitting and asking the questions after the presentations. Follow the case

report guidelines when writing your case questions. (Use the same heading format, no title, and

write the questions as a numbered list.)

Finally, Table 1 summarizes the schedule and deadlines for all aspects of the case

assignments. Table 2 lists the cases that we will discuss this semester.
