First of all, I would like to thank our physics teacher for providing us an opportunity to present
our research on the topic NTC thermistor.
Before the discussion of negative temperature coefficient thermistor, I would like to talk little bit about
thermistor
A thermistor is a temperature sensing device which shows the change in resistance as the temperature
changes.
It is further classified into:
Negative Temperature coefficient(NTC)
NTC thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor which shows decrease in resistance as
the temperature of a resistor increase.
Positive Temperature Coefficient(PTC)
PTC Is thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor which shows increase in resistance as
the temperature of the body increase.
Since our topic is Negative Temperature coefficient. I would only be describing about NTC;
NTC:
NTC thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor which shows decrease in resistance as the
temperature of a resistor increases. It is made from semiconductor material such as ferric oxides
with titanium doping i.e n type semiconductor. Example are SMD KT series. For every 1-degree
centigrade rise of temperature, 5% resistance will be decreased.

Types of NTC thermistors:
As my friend said a NTC thermistor is a type of resistor that outputs less resistance with increasing
temperature. On the basis of construction and materials used, NTC thermistors are of following types:
Bead thermistors
As the name suggests, these NTC thermistors have an appereance of bead (a small piece
of stone or glass that is threaded with others to make a decorative items like necklace). Ceramic
materials are used for the construction of bead thermistors. They generally offer fast response times,
better stability and allow operation at higher temperatures than other NTC sensors. However, they are
more vulnerable and commonly sealed in glass to protect them from mechanical damage.
Disk and Chip thermistors
These NTC thermistors have flat surfaces. They are larger and as a result, have slower
reaction times than bead type NTC resistors. However, because of their size and shape, it's easier to
attach and mount them on other surfaces. They can handle higher currents much better than bead
thermistors.
Glass encapsulated NTC thermistors
These NTC temperature sensors are sealed in an airtight glass bubble. Their appearance resembles the
appearance of bead thermistors. The specific design of this NTC thermistor improves the stability of the
sensor and protects the sensor from the harsh environmental conditions like mechanical stress, humidity
and chemicals. But they are more costly than other types of thermistors.

Application of NTC:
1. These types of thermistors are normally used in current digitalbecause of the temperature sensitivity,
compact size, fast response time, wide temperature range, cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and low power
consumption
2. These are very helpful in monitoring the temperature of the battery while they chargingto ensure safe
charging, prevent overheating, optimize charging performance.
3. These thermistors are also used in electronic circuits as current-limiting devices to their initial higher
resistance restricts the inrush current during power-up, protecting components and enhancing system
reliability.
4. NTC thermisrors can also be used as an alternative to a fuse.
5. NTC thermistor is used as temperature compensation devices

Advantages
The advantages of an NTC thermistor include the following.
1.They have High flexibility and sensitivity.
2.It can be used as a temperature sensor to detect temperature.
3.It provide high accuracy & interchangeability simultaneously.
4.A wide range of tolerances & sizes is available.
6.These thermistors respond to even mild changes in temperature.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of NTC thermistors include the following.
1.NTC thermistors are very sensitive components so they can destroy the entire appliance once
overheating occurs.
2.If this thermistor is damaged, then the dryer will not work at all.
3.These are specially made, so replacement is not possible.
4. While selecting an NTC thermistor, it is essential to verify the working point of the center temperature.

Why are NTC used over other thermal sensing device?
Ans: NTC thermistors are used over other thermal sensing devices due to their high sensitivity, compact
size, and cost-effectiveness. Their ease of integration into electronic circuits, fast response time, and
versatility across a wide temperature range make them ideal for applications demanding accurate and
rapid temperature measurements.

How to check the changes in resistance after increase in temperature OR change in
temperature?
As we know that,NTC thermistor is a thermally sensitive resistor which shows decrease in resistance as
the temperature of a resistor increase. After heating the resistor if it shows that resistance is decrease iyt
is working properly.
Practical method:
Step 1: Firstly, a multimeter is taken and it is set in ohm range i.e resistance range.
Step 2: A NTC thermistor is taken in a room temperature and it’s ohm value is taken.
Step 3: Using a heater, fire is started just below the resistor and heat is provided to a NTC.
Step 4: Using multimeter once more ohm is taken.
In this way we can see that that NTC resistor which is heated shows less resistance compare to resistance
kept in a room temperature.
