learning
Increase students ability to think analytically and
mathematical reasoning to solve daily problems in our lives.
Intro
ducti
Mathematics is playing an important role in our daily life.
Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of
shape, quantity and arrangement. Mathematics is all
on
around us, in everything we do. It is the building block for
everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices,
architecture (ancient and modern), art, money,
engineering, and even sports.
Since the beginning of recorded history, mathematics
discovery has been at the forefront of every civilized
society, and in use in even the most primitive of cultures.
The needs of mathematics arose based on the wants of
society. The more complex a society, the more complex
the mathematical needs. Primitive tribes needed little more
than the ability to count, but also relied on math to
calculate the position of the sun and the physics of
hunting.
Data analysis is a process of inspecting, cleansing,
transforming and modeling data with the goal of discovering
useful information, informing conclusions and supporting decision-
making. Data analysis has multiple facets and approaches,
encompassing diverse techniques under a variety of names and it
is used in different business, science and social science domains.
Part 1
Importance oF Data Analysis
Data analysis is playing an important role in every field. Below are
some of the examples.
1. Policing and Security
Nowadays, the crime rate is controlled in a certain range. This
is because the police officers get to know the area with higher
crime rate by analyzing. When the crime rate in some areas is
analysed, the police would put more attention at the area so
that the crime rate will decrease.
2. Logistics
Now, logistics companies work all around the world. They use
data analysis to analysis the data so that their efficiency will be
improved. This reduced their stress on the work and also
reduced the time that waste on keep checking.
3. Insurance
Majority of the people will buy an insurance, but not all of them
buy with a same person. Thus, the insurers have to do data
analysis. They need to determine what is the need of the
customer before they promote the insurance to the customer.
This will increase the efficiency on promoting the insurance.
4. Business
The enterprisers nowadays have to determine the type of
advertisement. They need to do analysis so that they know
which type of advertisement can bring them the largest profits.
Type
oF
Measur
There are three main types of measure of central tendency which
e oF
are :
1. Mean
Central
2. Median
3. Mode
Tenden
Mean
cy
Mean can be known as ‘average’ of a set of data.
Mean=
∑ of all values of data
number of data
For group data, the formula is
∑ fx
Mean=
f
(f = frequency, x = midpoint of the class)
For ungrouped data, the formula is
∑x
Mean=
N
(N = number of data, x = data)
Median
Median is the central value of a group of data after the data is
arranged in ascending order.
For ungrouped data, the formula is
T n+1
m=
2
(n = number of data)
For grouped data, the formula is
( )
1
n−F
2
m=L+ c
f
L = lower boundary
n = sum of frequency
F = cumulative frequency before median class
f = frequency of class
c = size of class
Mode
Mode is the value that has the most highest frequency in a set of
data. Mode can also known as the number which repeated more
often than the other numbers.
Example
For ungrouped data,
1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6
The mode is 1 as it repeated for 5 times.
For grouped data with frequency,
Marks Number of students
1 3
2 5
3 2
4 4
5 1
Mode = 2 marks
This is because there are 5 students get 2 marks.
For grouped data which is in class interval,
Marks Number of students
51-60 15
61-70 6
71-80 8
81-90 7
91-100 4
Mode = 51-60
This is because the class has the most number of students.
Type
oF
Measur
There are 4 types of measurement of
ement
dipersion.
1.Range
oF range
2.Interquartile
Dipersi
3.Variance
4.Standard deviation
on
Range
Range is the distance between the highest value and the lowest
value in a set of data.
Interquartile
Interquartile range is the difference the third quartile and the first
quartile.
The first quartile, Q1 is the value that divide the data before median
into two. The third quartile, Q3 is the value that divide the data after
median into two.
For example,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
First quartile = 2
Third quartile = 5
The first quartile can also be determined by using formula,
( )
1
n−F
4
Q1=L+ c
f
While the third quartile can be determined by using the
( )
3
n−F
formula, Q3=L+
4
c
f
*L = Lower boundary
n = sum of frequency
F = cumulative frequency before Q1/3
f = frequency of Q1/3 class
c = size of Q1/3 class
Standard deviation
Standard deviation is the average difference between a data value
and the arithmetic mean of all data values.
For ungrouped data, there is a formula σ = Σ
√ (x ¿¿ 2)
N
−¿ ¿ ¿
*N = number of data
x=mean
For grouped data, the formula is
√
σ= Σ
(fx¿¿ 2)
Σf
−¿ ¿ ¿
*f = frequency
x=mean
Variance
Variance is the square of standed deviation.
For the ungrouped data, there is a formula which is
( x¿¿ 2)
σ =Σ −¿ ¿
N
*N = number of data
(fx¿ ¿2)
For the grouped data, the formula is σ =Σ −¿ ¿

The friend who managed to get the highest mark is Houng Jun
Hong. He got 99 marks in the First Test and First Trial Examination
for twice. Therefore, I had interviewed him about learning
strategies in pursuit of excellence.
King Xu: Hi, Jun Hong. Do you have any free time now? Can I
interview you about your learning strategies in pursuit of
excellence?
Jun Hong: Of course.
King Xu: Okay, what is your learning strategies in pursuit of
excellence to learn Mathematics?
Jun Hong: First of all, I have arranged a time table for myself and
follow it. I arranged my daily time into a few parts that included
time for study, time for doing homework, time for exercise and also
the time for entertainment.
King Xu: Is there any other learning strategies in pursuit of
excellence?
Jun Hong: Yes. Besides arranged a time table, I have done a lot of
exercises of Mathematics and also the model paper. This can
improve my answer skills. Apart from that, I always teach my
friends that cannot manage to answer the question in Mathematics
because this can also improve my understanding to the topics of
Mathematics. Furthermore, I always ask the teacher when there is
a question that I can’t answer or confusing so that I can get the
correct answer. Last but not least, I also ask my mother about the
Mathematics when I have a question so that I can solve the
question correctly. That’s all for my learning strategies in pursuit of
excellence.
King Xu: Okay, thank you so much for your sharing of your
learning strategies in pursuit of excellence. I feel really useful to
myself about your learning strategies in pursuit of excellence.
Conclusion
In the first test, the mean of the marks of the whole class is about
77 marks while in the first trial examination, the mean of the marks
of the whole class is 81.5 marks. From the mean, we can see that
the students have a great improve in their skills of answering and
their marks get to improve. Besides, the number of A of students
has also increased
Reflection
From this Additional Mathematics Project Work Form 5 2020, I
have learned a lot throughout this project work. I have learned to
be more brave. I get to interview my friend that is not always talk to
me. Besides, I have learned about the learning strategies in pursuit
of excellence. Now, I know how to get a higher mark in the
Mathematics exam. More and more, I was able to use the formula
to solve the Additional Mathematics question correctly. This project
has also helped me to know about the way to analysis. I can
analysis the question, the problems that I am facing now or in the
future. This project can be seen as a revision as when I am doing
this project, I get to find the information and use the formula. Thus,
I feel a thousand of pleasure to do this Additional Mathematics
Project Work Form 5 2020.
