Changes in how professional translators practice their profession have been

recently frequent. They are not only derived by the growth of the young
discipline of translation, which is the success story of the 1980s, but also by
changes in the world around us such globalized societies and economies, the
spread of internet, and the need for intercultural communication, not to mention
the changes in the geography of translation with the move of the multi-million
industry towards the Middle East and the Arabic language. Translation in the
era of globalization requires interdisciplinary approach to translation that
stresses the need for a translator with background knowledge in various fields.
This necessitates training the learners in more than one field of specialization,
and hence a career certificate which focuses on the specializations of legal, UN
and economic translation on the one hand, and a career certificate which
includes journalistic, literary and audio-visual translation on the other hand.

Taking a quick path unto automation and digitalization, the translation

profession nowadays looks into practical techniques to help translators produce
more and waste less. The new course ‘Technology for Translators and
Interpreters’ in the Foundation Certificate in Translation and Interpreting with a
focus on CAT tools and translation software programs does not only train
learners on computer-assisted translation, but takes them directly into the on-
line translation environment. To satisfy a need for the translator as intercultural
communicator, also derived from globalization and the spread of new
technologies, new courses such as literary translation and audiovisual
translation were offered in a Career Certificate in Media and Literary
Translation.

The changes in the translation market have been given due focus in the
advanced courses such as Advanced Translation Problem-Solving Strategies
and Translation Portfolio and Project, which focus on topics such as translation
market and environment, project management in translation, code of ethics etc.
Learners in the Professional Diploma in Translation and the Professional
Diploma in Translation and Interpreting are nourished from day one on the
highest standards of professionalism of translation as an activity in the market
of service, of translation as a translator/client relationship and translation as a
mental process.

Furthermore, the translation diploma at ATS can be viewed as comprising three

stages. The first stage (The Foundation Certificate in Translation and
Interpreting) develops all basic translation skills required to produce an
acceptable translation including command of the language, familiarity with

culture, computer skills and e-tools for translators, background knowledge, and
contrastive and transfer skills between the source and the target languages.
Finishing this stage, a trainee can produce a good translation of a general text
but not necessarily of a specialized text such as legal, UN and journalistic texts.
The second stage (The Career Certificate in Legal and UN Translation and The
Career Certificate in Literary and Audiovisual Translation) focus on the text-
specific features in translation so that a trainee can be able to produce a
translation in a specialized field. After the career certificate, the trainee can
produce a sound translation in a certain specialization, but he may not be aware
of many factors related to the environment of translation such as certain code of
ethics, rates, project management etc. The diploma is the level of
professionalism which makes the trainee ready to go to the market after being
enlightened on many issues related to translation theory and the translation
market.

well as practicing translators and interpreters.

Course Description:
This course focuses on training learners on translation of critical documents such as laws, contracts
certificates etc. which require the utmost attention to ensure the production of accurate translation.
Furthermore, the course expands the trainee’s repertoire of legal vocabulary, terminology and
expressions.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, learners will be able to
1. list linguistic principles governing legal language in Arabic and English;
2. describe linguistic principles governing legal language in Arabic and English;
3. produce legal lexical equivalents;
4. rewrite translated legal documents in standard legal language;
5. translate legal documents accurately; and
6. revise translated legal documents.

All classes are conducted as workshops.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Frequency** : Three assessments and a project.
Type: Written tests and/or projects.

 Classroom assessments should not take more than 30 minutes.

 The first two assessments should be recorded in the class folder by session 7.
 Learners’ grades are based upon three assessments during the course (70%) and an end-of-term
project (30%).
 Instructors are required to provide learners with appropriate feedback on their performance
throughout the course.
 For all written courses, three assessments at least should be conducted as follows:

Features and Translation

 What is legal language?

Legal language is the language used in granting legal rights, imposing legal obligations
and/or providing legal information. (Tiersma 1999:67)

 Forms of legal language

Legal language may be oral, as in case of oral pleadings, or written as in case of
contracts.

The commonest forms of legal language include, without limitation:

- contracts,
- constitutions and laws,
- treaties and conventions,
- acknowledgments,
- powers of attorney and proxies,
- deeds,
- court documents, and
- legal books.

 Features of legal language

1- Old or archaic vocabulary

4- Abundant use of unusual sentence structures

Legalese

Structure Vocabulary

Legal language is characterized by the use of special vocabulary. It often

employs very formal and even archaic words. It also employs technical
terminology peculiar to this kind of language.

01- Formal and Archaic Words

Lawyers, whether Arabic or English speaking, tend to use formal and even
archaic words. One reason for this is that they believe that using such
words and phrases makes their language majestic, impressive and thus
persuasive.

12- Couplets, Triplets, and Strings of Synonyms

Couplet, triplets and strings of synonyms are a combination of two or three words
with fairly or exactly the same meaning. They are also called synonyms or near
synonyms. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, English courts were held in French.
The Normans were originally Vikings, but after they conquered the region of
Normandy, they became French; then they took over England. But most people in
England, surprisingly enough, still spoke English. So lawyers started using two or
three words for one. For example, Free is English; clear is from the French "clere".
Couplet and triplets are still in use as a legal tradition. «It is probably also not without
significatnce that early document drafters, called scriveners, were paid by the
word.2»They are rare in Arabic but are common in English legalese.

Contract with Teacher

THIS CONTRACT, is entered into by and between _______ a Teacher, and the
Board of Directors, hereinafter called the Board, of the ________ School
District, located at _______, County of _________, State of Iowa.
In consideration of the salary of ($ ______ 3) per school year, or more
specifically, ($______) _____________ Dollars per school month of four weeks
for a term of ______school months, said Teacher agrees to well and faithfully
perform the duties of _______ and such other duties connected with the public
schools in said district as may be assigned by the board or its duly authorized
representative, such salary payable in installments of ($_____) on the _____ day
of each calendar school month for a period of _____ consecutive months, the
first payment to be made on the _____ day of _______, 20___, or in
installments payable as follows: ______.

AND IT IS FURTHER AGREED:

1) That said term shall commence on the _______ day of _________________,
20___, and shall include _______ days of service, of which _______ days
shall be teaching days and 1/____th of the annual salary shall be considered
as pay for one day of service.
2) That an amount equal to the pay for one day of service shall be deducted
from the salary of said teacher for each day of service not performed if
absence from duty with pay is not authorized by the board.
3) That if said teacher is lawfully discharged or is released by mutual agreement
before the completion of said term, final settlement shall be made so the total
amount which the teacher shall have received shall be an amount equal to the
product of the number of days of service multiplied by the amount
considered as pay for one day of service.
4) That the use to be made of the days in said term, which are in excess of the
number of teaching days as stated herein, shall be determined by the board
and may be stated in a school calendar adopted by the board.

School districts must pay a minimum of $23,000 for a full-time teacher.

5) That said teacher shall attend, outside of regular school hours as established
by the board, such professional meetings as might be called by school
authorities for coordinating the work of the teacher in the school program.
6) That the teacher shall present the Board Secretary with proof that he or she is
qualified and properly certified to complete his or her teaching assignment
and the teacher shall not accept, and the District shall not be under any
obligation to pay, any part of the annual salary until said qualifications and
certification are submitted.
7) That this contract shall be subject to the provisions of Iowa Code, §§279.13
and 279.19 inclusive, and 279.27.
8) That this contract shall be invalid if the teacher is under contract with another
Board of Directors in the state of Iowa to teach covering the same period of
time.

THIS CONTRACT shall be without force and effect unless it is in the

hands of the board, bearing the signature of said teacher and the president of the
board on or before the _______ day of _________________, 20___.
