Science (Week 4)

This document summarizes a student's science assignment on plate tectonics. It includes pre-tests and activities identifying the three main types of plate boundaries: convergent boundaries where plates move towards each other, divergent boundaries where they move apart, and transform boundaries where they slide past each other. Maps and diagrams are used to illustrate examples of each boundary type. The importance of understanding plate tectonics for anticipating geological hazards is also discussed.

SCIENCE – 10

Name: Tauto-an, Christine L. Grade & Section: Grade 10 – Diamond

First Grading – Module 4 – Week 4
PLATE TECTONICS: Plate Boundaries

PRE-TEST
1. B. Tectonic boundary
2. A. Convergent boundary
3. B. Divergent boundary
4. C. Transform boundary
5. C. Transform boundary
6. A. Convergent
7. C. Plate Boundaries
8. C. subduction
9. A. trench
10. C. Transform boundary

ACTIVITY 1: KNOW YOUR BOUNDARY (PART 1)

Questions:
1. The yellow line indicates a line that marks the limits of an area or a dividing line
that serves as boundary.
2. The structure that divides one house from the other is a concrete structure that
protrudes or extends between two houses serves as a boundary in between.
3. A boundary is a line that marks the limits of an area. It is a dividing line that
separates one area from the other. It is important because it secures one’s property,
for example a lot boundary.

ACTIVITY 2: KNOW YOUR BOUNDARY (PART 2)

Questions:
Refer to the discussion above.
1. The types of plate boundaries are Convergent boundary, Divergent boundary,
and Transform Fault boundary.
2. Convergent boundary is characterized by two plates moving toward each other.
It is also called a destructive boundary because when two plates come together, the
impact of the two colliding plates buckles the edge of one or both plates up into a
rugged mountain range, and sometimes bend down into a deep seafloor trench.
Divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other.
It is also called a constructive boundary because new crust is generated as the
plates move away from each other. Transform fault boundary occurs when two
plates sliding past each other. This type of boundary is neither constructive nor
destructive. It is called conservative boundary because there is no formation of new
crust and destruction of the old one.
3. The boundaries are characterized by their relative motion.
Refer to the illustrations above (Figure A-C)
1. The soda crackers represent the Earth’s crust.
2. The arrows indicate the direction of motion of the plates.
3. Figure A represents transform fault boundary
4. Figure B shows convergent plate boundary and figure C illustrates divergent
plate boundary.
5. Figure A represents transform fault boundary, that occurs when two plates
sliding past each other. Figure B shows convergent plate boundary that is
characterized by two plates moving toward each other. Figure C illustrates
divergent plate boundary that occurs when two tectonic plates move away from
each other.

ACTIVITY 3: KNOW YOUR BOUNDARY (PART 3)

Questions:
1. The arrows on the map indicate the direction of motion of the plates.
2. The plates that shows convergent boundaries are Eurasian & African Plates,
Nazca & South American Plates, Antarctic & North American Plates, North
American & Eurasian Plates, Philippine & Eurasian Plates, and Pacific &
Australian Plates.
3. The plates that shows convergent boundaries are Nazca & Pacific Plates, North
American & African Plates, Pacific & Antarctic Plates, African & Antarctic Plates,
South American & African Plates, and Australian & Antarctic Plates.
4. The plates that illustrates transform fault boundaries are Nazca & Coco’s Plates,
Australian & Iranian Plates , and African & Antarctic Plates.
5. The tectonics plate move according to the motion of Divergent, Convergent and
Transform Fault boundaries.
APPLICATION
1. It is important for us to understand the movements of plates because it is a
significant stuff that we should learn for us to have knowledge and be able to
figure out about our everyday situation and when disaster occurs because these
geologic events have a massive effect not only in the environment but also to us,
humans.
2. The processes along plate boundaries affect our life by being at risk every time
because these plates are in constant motion causing some geologic events like
earthquakes, volcanic eruption and mountain building and since the Philippines is
one of the countries situated in the circum of Pacific belt or the Pacific “Ring of
Fire”, it is expected that we'll be experiencing a lot of disasters that may bring
great impact in our lives.
