ACTIVITY 1
SPLIT AND SEPARATE (PART 1)
QUESTIONS:
Q1. The feature that is common among the four pictures is fissures or cracks at the
center.
Q2. The Earth’s crust is moving away from each other or splitting in opposite
direction which could result to the formation of cracks.
Q3. If the splitting of the crust in opposite direction continues for millions of years,
then the distance between the land masses will become greater and the fissures will
become bigger.
STUDY THE PICTURE BELOW AND ANSWER THE QUESTION THAT
FOLLOW
1. The gap at the center from the topmost picture to the lowermost part is spreading
or splitting apart which results in becoming bigger and wider.
2. The geologic features formed here are rift valleys and oceanic ridges.
ACTIVITY 2
SPLIT AND SEPARATE (PART 2)
QUESTIONS:
1. the movement of the lithospheric plates is moving away or splitting apart from
each other.
2. It is indicated by the cracks or rifts that are formed when oceanic plates split
apart and also the arrows in the pictures which indicates the movement of the
lithospheric plates.
3. In oceanic-oceanic divergence, cracks or rifts are formed which are filled by
molten magma that rises and finds its way into the rift. This molten magma, due to
the presence of water, solidifies more quickly, thus forming volcanic islands. The
Mid- Atlantic ridge is an example of a volcano that was formed due to oceanic-
oceanic divergence.
4. In continental-continental divergence, the continents are stretched, and the crust
becomes thinner, giving rise to a rift valley. Formation of ocean also happen in this
type of movement. The features/events in oceanic convergence is not the same as
the continental convergence.
5. If divergent plate boundaries did not exist, there will be no submarine mountain
range such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, volcanic activity in a form of fissure
eruptions, shallow earthquake activity, creation of new seafloor, and widening of
ocean basin.
ACTIVITY 3
SLIDE AND SHAKE
QUESTIONS:
1. In transform plate boundaries, the plates slide against each other in opposite
directions.
2. The geologic process/event that will occur along transform fault boundary is
earthquakes that are formed from the movement of plates which release massive
amount of energy.
3. If a massive earthquake happens underwater, a tsunami might occur.
4. An example of a transform fault- boundary found in a continent is the San
Andreas Fault, the sliding boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North
American Plate.
5. If I am living near a fault line where I am always at risk, I should be alert and
aware, this includes knowing what to do before, during and after an earthquake by
participating in earthquake drills in school and in or place for me to be prepared, so
that less casualties will be destroyed and that no lives will be in total danger.
APPLICATION
How are the processes along the plate boundaries affect our lives? Site examples.
The processes along plate boundaries affect our life by being at risk every
time because these plates are in constant motion causing some geologic events like
earthquakes and volcanic eruption, and since the Philippines is one of the countries
situated in the circum of Pacific belt or the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, it is expected
that we'll be experiencing a lot of disasters that may bring great impact in our lives.
One of these is the destructive earthquake which we experienced lately that
produces such as ground shaking, ground rupture, landslides, liquefaction and
devastating tsunamis. This can cause serious effects in our lives that many people
have been rendered homeless or suffered injuries in various ways, and worst could
cause death by many people. Geologic events that can affect our lives also includes
tragic volcanic eruption that were experienced by the people living in Taal which
erupted on January 12, 2020 that has caused severe damages and brought
catastrophic effects to their lives. However, the presence of volcanoes has both
advantages and disadvantages. Some of the hazards brought about by a volcanic
eruption are suffocation, floods, mudslides, power interruption, potable water
contamination, and air travel disruption. People should be vigilant enough
especially though who are living near a volcano. On the other hand, volcanoes
have a lot of benefits to humans. It can be a source of geothermal energy, precious
stones and other products. It can also be a tourist attraction because of its beautiful
scenery. Materials from volcanoes can provide nutrients to the surrounding soil
and some are processed to produce beauty products.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY
On July 17,2020 at 7:17 am, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake hit our area particularly in
Minglanilla, Cebu.
Question:
How can we lessen the impact of earthquake in our own homes? Suggest at least 5
ways.
The best and easy way to lessen the impact of earthquake in our own homes
is by evaluating and knowing the high at-risk parts as well as renovating and
making it sturdy enough to withstand countless of disasters. Firstly, by making
sure that your house is made from solid materials and is well-built enough that can
resist strong shaking of the grounds. Secondly, by securing your belongings.
Always be careful in falling objects and overturned furniture during an earthquake
for it can bring harm to your family, but we can reduce it by putting anchor to your
heavy and tall furniture to the wall or floor to prevent them from turning over, this
includes putting latches on cabinet doors and fastening your water heater and other
appliances. Thirdly, by minimizing of using glasses at homes for it can cause
severe damage in anyone especially when shaking because it may fall and may
result to loss of life. Fourthly, by familiarizing the sections in your house that
occupy the utilities, and connections of gas appliances and also be sure to secure
them tightly to prevent any further problems such as starting a fire. Lastly, is by
disciplining the people inside the house, this includes knowing what to do before,
during and after an earthquake to give awareness to them to stay calm and to react
appropriately in the situation. A discussion with the whole family is needed to
avoid further problems and to prevent the situation in getting worse. We cannot
prevent natural earthquakes from occurring but we can significantly mitigate their
effects by identifying hazards, building safer structures, and providing education
on earthquake safety. By preparing for natural earthquakes we can also reduce the
risk from human induced earthquakes.
