NOTES ON HOW TO USE THIS HANDBOOK L1
o
pr
Zoi1
s
This HANDBOOK constitutes an aid to the design of seismic protection systems for fire sprinklers. Specifically, it provides examples of sway braces sizing per the require-
ki
F1
ments of FM Global Property Loss Prevention Datasheet 2-8—2017 Edition.
This handbook is divided into two sections, which we have called FM1 and FM2.
o o S1
FM1 looks at protecting a sprinkler system consisting of risers, feedmains, crossmains and branch lines against the seismic action per
d b directions provided in the FM Glo-
the L2
n
Ha
bal Property Loss Prevention Datasheet 2-8 2017 Edition guideline.
Zoi2
FM2 focuses on at protecting a section of the sprinkler system consisting of branch lines only.
The manual consists of bundles or files of index cards.
D Y F2
In each bundle, sway braces have been laid out and selected braces have been sized according to the indicationsD
A provided by the referenced standard FM Global Property S2
t Cbut the sizing ends with the fitting connecting to the brace member.
Loss Prevention Datasheet 2-8—2017 Edition.
n
FM2
e
This handbook does not include the sizing of the attachments to the structure via anchors or other means,
Similarly, this handbook does not cover the requirements for static vertical loads (hangers).
n V L3
Also, the instructions provided do not replace the structural calculation, which is necessarye
f th
to comply with the local seismic regulations and which must be taylored to each Zoi3
actual situation.
The handbook provides a set of general information, not automatically transferableo
F3
design, including verification of the sway braces and verification of the support n
to the actual situations of specific job sites; the person in charge of the entire structural
t i o structure of the building is still the engineer in charge, as provided by the local codes.
A selection guide for the nVent CADDY product range available in variousugeographies is provided at the end of this handbook.

Flow chart of the logical path to follow to size sway braces
t h
The flow chart summerizes o the logical process to follow in order to size sway braces
a u of the seismic protection system for a sprinkler system according to FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 2-8 is presented next.
An example of calculation
U n
The logical process illustrated in the flow chart has been applied to an example in the following pages.
Two different hypotheses for the sway brace layout are used in the example; the zone of influence and the weights in the zone of influence for selected sway braces were
calculated accordingly. We then proceeded to size these sway braces, verifying that the design forces were less than the maximum allowable forces.
Note: The calculation for anchoring the sway braces to the structure is not covered in this handbook.

Step 3: Seismic design force calculation
b i t
hi
L1
The table below shows the seismic force for sway braces H, N, U, V, T, R based on the pipe weight in the zone of influence of each sway brace and on the “G” factor. The net

vertical uplift is also included. Zoi1
s
ki
Net vertical uplift F1
b
FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 2-8 Section 2.2.1.3.5.6 requires verification that the sway brace is able to resist the net vertical uplift (VF), which is calculated
nd
L2
as the difference between the vertical uplift force induced by the horizontal seismic force (H) and half the weight of the pipes in the zone of influence (WP):

S2
In our cases, the horizontal seismic force is equal to 0.65 times the weight of the pipe; our intent is to install the braces at an angle greater than 60° from vertical. With these
nt
assumptions, VF is always less than or equal to 0. FM2
e
It is not necessary to plan for the sway braces to absorb the net vertical lift because FM Global Property Loss Prevention 2-8 section 2.2.1.3.5.6 only requires the installation of
nV
L3
systems capable of resisting said net vertical lift when VF is greater than 0.
