BASIC OUTLINE
1. Social, Political, Economic and Cultural Situations of 19th century Philippines
A. When it was 19th century in the Philippines, Spaniards ruled the government of the
Philippines. It affected most of all aspects of living of our ancestors from that time,
thus it made most of them to rebel on Spanish regime and made a guerrilla
organization that has a will of gaining independence from Spaniards and the guerrilla
was called “KKK” or “Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan”. Most of the “baryos” or small communities was influenced by the Spanish
friars which made us a Christians and this Catholic priest has affiliation to Spanish
government. “KKK” also fought with the Americans even though they’re different
from Spaniards but also, American regime affected our ancestors way of living that
time.
1. Padre Gil’s catholic organization, from: Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo
ngayon
a. The particular scene from the movie proves that Catholic associates
has connections to Spanish government which made Kulas (the
protagonist) a rich Indio and entitled him as a member of true Filipino. I
observed also on how Spaniard treat their friars like they’re highest
compare to the generals of Spanish soldiers.
2. When the Americans attained the Manila from Spaniards
a. From the movie of “Heneral Luna”, the katipuneros didn’t held back
after they fought with the Spaniards when General Luna thought that
the Americans are just negotiating with the Spaniards to give them the
community of Manila with an exchange of something. KKK continued
to fight for the will and independence of Filipinos from foreign
dynasties.
B. When the Americans finished the fight with the guerillas “KKK”, a scene
from: Heneral Luna.
a. I observed that during the regime of Pres. Manuel Quezon, many of
the Filipinos changed and elevated their way of living and I think many
of Filipinos also knew their identity as a true Filipino not an Indios. But
still the Christianity or the Catholic influence are still in our culture from
that time.
2. Summary
19th century of the Philippines has a lot of turmoil and confusion on our ancestors
which also made them feel culture shocked because of the foreign dynasties that
conquered our country. That was also the time where our ancestors willing to fight for the
independence and will that’s why “KKK” was risen.

REFLECTION
Reflect on the film “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” What emotions did you feel
when you watched the movie? Do you think we can return to that kind of society? What
lessons have you learned from that old society? Reflect in no more than five, at least (5)
sentences.
I’m amazed on how our Filipino ancestors coped up with their situation during the
Spanish propaganda. Our ancestors didn’t let the situation affect their responsibilities on
their lives as they work hard every day just to provide their needs and their loves ones
needs. As Diding said “Kung hindi ka marunong lumamon, mundo ang lalamon sayo” and
that’s inspiring for me as an aspiring Architect of my generation.
I think we still have this kind of society but of course due to globalization, many
aspects of this society has changed depending on the situation we’ve been. But still after I
watched the film, it is still remarkable how our fellow Filipinos worked hard every day and
some worked hard to attain the entitlement of being a true Filipino since base from the film,
I think being a Filipino from that time was too privileged just to be called as one and if you’re
a poor citizen that time, they will call you as an Indio. Not just that but it’s also inspiring on
how the Katipuneros fight for their will and rights just to be independent from the Spanish
regime. If I will apply this to myself, maybe I can unleash my true potential to attain my
dreams and goals on my life.
