healthy practices at work in maritime sector.

This course program is intended to increase

awareness among seafarers on the nature and
extent of alcohol and drug problems in the
maritime sector particularly among officers
and ratings on board and the preventive
measure and policies to address such
problems.

Topic: Working at heights/work aloft
Materials: Multi-media equipment, Power point presentation
References: Safety seamanship Training Hands Out Book

III. PROCEDURE:
A. PRE-ASSESSMENT
Students will be asked what are the rule of heights and hazards for working at heights

B. MOTIVATION/REVIEW (This is a kick starter, a connection from the previous lesson or a motivational
activity to start the lesson)

Students will be asked on how to inspect the equipment before using and proper visual and actual checking of the
equipment.

C. LESSON PROPER (Following a pedagogy of 5Es (Engage-Explore-Explain-Elaborate-Evaluate) or 4As

(Activity-Analysis-Abstraction-Application)

Activity 1:
Working at heights/Work aloft

ANALYSIS:
Instruction: Answer the following question. (10 Points)

1.What are the difference of work restraint lanyards to fall arrest with shock absorber?

ABSTRACTION:

What is working at height?

At sea the definition is;

Working at height at 2 meters or more above the ground or deck

Definition in U.K. I industrial legislation-working at heights regulations

Work in any place from which a person could fall a distance liable to cause person injury.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

GRAVITY – Things always fall down

You may fall
Something may fall on you
Equipment or structural failure
(These all are hazards)

Hierarchy of Hazard Control

Engineering
Administration or Procedures
PPE

Work restraint
Work positioning
Nets and airbags

The first three prevent

The last one minimize

Fall Protection Hierarchy

Work Restraint- The equipment restricts the movements of the user to prevent them from approaching the hazard.

Work positioning- works positioning equipment holds you in the work and reduce the risk of falling , when working
position the equipment you need to attached to fall arrest.

Hierarchy of Hazard Control

Engineering
Administration or Procedures
PPE REGULATION

Control of work- JHA’s & Permit to work

Training and awareness
Equipment inspection and evaluation

The Rule for Working at Heights

All other option have been ruled

A fixed flatform is used with guard or handrail , verified by a competent person
A fall arrest equipment is used that has;
A proper anchor , mounted preferable overhead
Full body harness using double latch self locking snap hooks at each connection
Synthetic fiber lanyards
Shock absorber
Fall arrest equipment will limit freefall to 2 meters (6Feet) or less
A visual inspection of the fall arrest equipment and system is completed and any equipment that is damaged or has been
activated is taken out of service
Persons are competent to perform permit of work
No lone workers
Correct equipment in use
Equipment inspected and fit for use
Competent persons performing task
Rescue plan in place reviewed

Harness with double latch and snap hooks , shock absorber , fall arrest

Inspection of the Equipment

Check if markings , label or tag if you;

Can’t see
Can’t read
YOU CANNOT USE

Check the equipment by date

If the equipment is appropriate for use
If The equipment for damage wear

Markings of the equipment

All equipment must carry the following markings

Product description
Manufacturers details
Date of manufacture
CE mark and number
EN number
Individuals serial number or batch number to identify the product and link it to its declaration of conformity and
inspection records

Examples of markings

Inspection requirements

All equipment requires inspection before being issued in to use by competent person
Equipment should visually inspected by user before each use
Usual policy is thorough examine by a competent person at least 6months
Interim inspection can be carried out at intervals determined by risk assessment if equipment used in arduous (difficult
and tiring) environment
All examination record must be kept throughout the life of the equipment(cradle to grave)

What to look for inspection?

Cuts and abrasions

Chemical damage
Heat damage
Ultraviolent radiation
Water damage
Falls/ deployment
Contamination exp. Dirt , grit etc.
Age
Misuse

Cuts and abrasions

Any webbing with a cut from the edge of more than 1mm retired
Any holes or cuts within the material should be retired
Any substantial or full width abrasion will result in scrapping in scrapping the item
Any cracks in hardware or reduction in its width or diameter should be retire

Harness Life span

Maximum lifespan (including the storage) 10 years from the date of manufacture
INTER-GLOBAL COLLEGE FOUNDATION, INC.
Bocohan, Lucena City Registration No. 16Q13029

_________________________________________________________________________
Maximum (working lifespan) 5 years from the first date of issue . but not exceeding the above
If in doubt regarding any item of the equipment , quarantine the suspect item and consult the supplier
If you doubt it- don’t use it!

Fall arrest

Fall arrest is the only category that actually allows a fall to take place

The fall arrest shock absorber system then reacts by stopping the fall in controlled manner

Fall factor

Fall factor computation

FF0=(0 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙)/(2𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒)

FF1= (2 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙)/(2𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒)

FF2= (4 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙)/(2𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒)

Fall distance – Fall factor 2

The fall with lanyard – the shock absorbing lanyard is designed to reduce the force on the body to a maximum of;
6kN
What is a kilonewton
1kN=100kg
6kN=600kg
An anchor point must be able to take 1000kg
1000kg=10kN

THE FALL

An arresting force of up to 6kN exerted on the body is survivable by fall

An arresting force of between 6-10kN means that some people will survive
An arresting force of over 10kN WILL KILL YOU

Suspension trauma

If a person should fall in the harness they should not be suspended longer than 15-20 minutes in an upright position before
being rescued.
Signs and symptoms that may be observed in an individual who is suffering from suspension trauma are;
Faintness
Breathlessness
Sweating
Paleness
Hot flashes
Increased heart rate
Nausea
Dizziness
Low heart rate
Low bp
Loss of vision

Rescue

Rescue procedure should include the following contingency based action;

Keep casualties legs moving in a pumping position

Monitor for signs and symptoms of suspension trauma
INTER-GLOBAL COLLEGE FOUNDATION, INC.
Bocohan, Lucena City Registration No. 16Q13029

_________________________________________________________________________
Ensuring that the workers receives standard trauma resuscitation once rescued keep the upper body raised
If the worker is unconscious keep their air passage open and obtain first aid help immediately
The rescue team must be very carefully in the way they handle them take between 30-40 minutes to move the casualty
from a sitting to a flat position
Monitor the casualty after rescue and seek medical assistance

WORKERS SHOULD NEVER BE PERMITTED TO WORK ALONE IN A HARNESS

Processing Question: For the rule of working at heights enumerate the fall arrest equipment is used that has:
