Mary Quant
Mary Quant is one of Britain’s most famous fashion designers. She was born in London in 1930 and studied
illustration at Goldsmiths College, where she met her future husband. She got married when she was twenty-
three, and, with her husband and photographer Archie McNair, opened her first boutique called Bazaar in
1955.
In the early part of her career, she introduced white plastic collars which she added to jumpers and dresses
to make them brighter, and a man’s cardigan that was so long that it could be worn as a dress! In the early
1950s and 1960s, Quant was one of only two designers in London who offered colourful, bold and affordable
clothes for young people. She wanted fashion to be a way of showing how you can have a different style to
anyone else and was often a model for the clothes herself. Quant wanted her fashion to be available for all,
and some of her styles were available to make yourself with paper patterns, which you could use
with the material of your choice.
One of her signature designs that made her immortal is the miniskirt, which became one of the defining
fashions of the 1960s. Although she may not have invented it herself (other designers have said that in fact
the miniskirt was their idea), she definitely gave it its name, inspired by another cult object of the time –
the Mini, the car she had chosen for herself. It was Quant who was the mastermind behind the miniskirt’s
enormous popularity. Worn with brightly coloured tights, Quant’s miniskirts symbolised a new era of women’s
liberation.
In the 1970s and 1980s, she focused mostly on designs for things for the home, women’s make-up and skincare
products instead of just clothing. One of these designs was the duvet, which Quant has said she invented.
In 2015, she was made a dame in the New Year Honours for her services to British fashion.
