BRAZIL
LOCATION
• Brazil , country of South America that occupies half the continent’s landmass. It is the fifth largest
country in the world, exceeded in size only by Russia, Canada, China, and the United States, though its
area is greater than that of the 48 conterminous U.S. states. Brazil faces the Atlantic Ocean along 4,600
miles (7,400 km) of coastline and shares more than 9,750 miles (15,700 km) of inland borders with every
South American country except Chile and Ecuador—specifically, Uruguay to the south; Argentina,
Paraguay, and Bolivia to the southwest; Peru to the west; Colombia to the northwest; and Venezuela,
Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana to the north. Brazil stretches roughly 2,700 miles (4,350 km) from
north to south and from east to west to form a vast irregular triangle that encompasses a wide range of
tropical and subtropical landscapes, including wetlands, savannas, plateaus, and low mountains.
HISTORY OF BRAZIL
• Before the arrival of the Europeans, the lands that now constitute Brazil were occupied, fought
over and settled by diverse tribes. Thus, the history of Brazil begins with the indigenous people in
Brazil. The Portuguese arrived to the land that would become Brazil on April 22, 1500, commanded
by Pedro Álvares Cabral, an explorer on his way to India under the sponsorship of the Kingdom of
Portugal and the support of the Catholic Church.
RIO DE JANEIRO
• Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, the city was initially the seat of the Captaincy of Rio
de Janeiro, a domain of the Portuguese Empire. In 1763, it became the capital of the State
of Brazil, a state of the Portuguese Empire. In 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Court
moved to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro became the seat of the court of Queen Maria I of Portugal.
She subsequently, under the leadership of her son the prince regent John VI of Portugal,
raised Brazil to the dignity of a kingdom, within the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and
Algarves. Rio remained as the capital of the pluricontinental monarchy until 1822, when
the Brazilian War of Independence began. This is one of the few instances in history that
the capital of a colonizing country officially shifted to a city in one of its colonies. Rio de
Janeiro subsequently served as the capital of the independent monarchy, the Empire of
Brazil, until 1889, and then the capital of a republican Brazil until 1960 when the capital
was transferred to Brasília.
Brazilian food
Moqueca (pronounced moo-kek-a)
• More than a mere fish stew, moqueca is served with theatrical flourish as the piping hot clay pot
is uncovered at the table amid clouds of fragrant steam.
Cachaça
• Dating back to the 1500s, cachaça is made from fermented sugarcane juice and is best known as
the fiery kick in caipirinhas – Brazil’s national cocktail. While caipirinhas are often made with
uncoloured, unaged cachaças, there are thousands of better-quality golden varieties available, aged
in wooden barrels and sipped straight up by aficionados.

NATIONAL FOOTBA
L TEAM
• Brazil is the most successful national team in the FIFA
World Cup, being crowned winner five times: 1958, 1962,
1970, 1994 and 2002. The Seleção also has the best overall
performance in the World Cup competition, both in
proportional and absolute terms, with a record of 76 victories
in 114 matches played, 129 goal difference, 247 points, and 19
losses.[11][12] It is the only national team to have played in all
World Cup editions without any absence nor need for
playoffs,[13] and the only team to have won the World Cup in
four different continents: once in Europe (1958 Sweden), once
in South America (1962 Chile), twice in North America (1970
Mexico and 1994 United States), and once in Asia (2002 South
Korea/Japan). Brazil was also the most successful team in the
now-defunct FIFA Confederations Cup, winning it four times,
in 1997, 2005, 2009, and 2013. With the capture of the gold
medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics,[14] Brazil has become
one of only two countries, the others being France, to have
won all men's FIFA 11-player competitions at all age level.
