I Can Connect
Let us recall on your previous knowledge…
What is a sentence? Sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete
idea/thought. It has a subject (tells about the topic) and predicate (tells about the
subject). Can you identify the complete subject and complete predicate in this
sentence? The dog barks at strangers.
( subject – The dog ; predicate – barks at strangers)
What do we call then a group of sentences?
I Can Learn
Now, let us study the following…
What is a paragraph?
A paragraph is made up of sentences that focus on a single idea. The first
sentence of a paragraph is indented. It has three parts.
What are these 3 parts of a paragraph ?
1. The topic sentence is the sentence that gives the reader insight or
idea what the paragraph is all about. It states the main idea of a paragraph.
It is located at the beginning of a paragraph. Sometimes, it can be found in the
middle or end of a paragraph. You have to read well the paragraph so that
you can be able to recognize the topic sentence correctly.
2. Supporting sentences make up the body of a paragraph. It expands
the topic sentence in detail to develop the idea presented on it. That is why it
is also called supporting details. The number of sentences vary but a typical
paragraph should have two or five supporting sentences.
3. A concluding sentence marks the end of the paragraph
and it summarizes or raises the key point of the paragraph. This is usually the
the last sentence in a paragraph.
Take for example this paragraph –
( 1 ) Ana is an excellent pupil. ( 2 ) She is intelligent.
( 3 ) She is responsible. (4 ) Ana always does her homework, and
she is never late for class. ( 5 ) As a result of her hard work, Ana is
one of the best pupils in school
1. Which is the topic sentence in the above paragraph?
( Yes, it is # 1- Ana is an excellent pupil. )
2
2. Which is the concluding sentence?
( Right, #5 – As a result of her hard work, Ana is one of the best pupils in
