Chapter 1
Introduction
Study habits are one of the main reasons why academic success is possible. Many students face
challenges when it comes to finding an effective study habits that will truly enhance their academic
performance and learning experience. Students often use inappropriate and ineffective methods,
leading to faulty habits in their approach to learning. This can result in poor academic performance
and lack of success in their approach to learning such as failing in quizzes, tests and examinations.
Improving academic performance is the goal of every student (alimohamadi, Deghani, Paymard &
Khalili, 2018)
According to Arieta, Gementiza and Saco (2017) they point out that study habits play a significant
role in students' journey. The success and failure of students depends on how efficient study habits
they have used and the study also states that study is an art that requires thorough practice and effort.
However, students' academic success depends on how efficient their study habits was and how much
ability, action, intelligence and effort of the student that they put into their studies.
Creating a conducive study environment is another important study habit that significantly
impacts academic performance. A quiet and well-organized space, free from distractions, eliminates
inappropriate study habits and allows students to focus and concentrate fully on their studies. Having
all necessary materials and resources readily available further enhances the learning experience.
The researchers conducted this study entitled " Enhancing Academic Performance: Evaluating
the Effectiveness of Various Study Habits of the Students" to understand which study habits yield the
best results and empower students to make informed decisions that optimize their educational
achievement. Academic performance is a key indicator of educational attainment, and by identifying
effective study habits, we can improve learning outcomes.

strategies and curriculum development. Teachers can incorporate effective study techniques
into their lesson plans and provide guidance to students on how to optimize their study
habits. This can lead to more engaging and effective classroom experiences, as well as
improved student-teacher relationships.
Institutions - Academic performance is a key indicator of the institution's success and
reputation. By promoting effective study habits, institutions can enhance their overall
academic performance and attract more students. This can contribute to a positive learning
environment and foster a culture of academic excellence.
Future researchers - It provides a foundation for further exploration and investigation into
the field of study habits and their impact on academic performance. Future researchers can
build upon the findings of this study and delve deeper into specific aspects of study habits,
such as time management, note-taking techniques, or active learning strategies.
Scope and Delimitation
This Study is mainly focus on various study habits and their effectiveness in enhancing the
academic performance of the students. It considers study techniques, time management,
and learning approaches across different academic levels and fields.
The focus is solely on how study habits influence outcomes, without delving into broader
aspects.
This is study is limited to all grade 10 students in Kaylaway National High School and not
applicable to other year level.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
The terms below are conceptually used in the study to provide a better understanding;
1. Study Habits: The specific behaviors and strategies that students engage in during their
study sessions, such as setting a specific study schedule, using active learning techniques,
and regularly reviewing and summarizing study materials.
2. Academic Success: The measurable outcomes of a student's academic performance,
including grade point average (GPA), scores on standardized tests, completion of
assignments and projects, and successful completion of courses or degree programs.
3. Ineffective Methods: Study approaches or techniques that have been shown through
research to have a negative impact on learning outcomes, such as passive reading without
active engagement, cramming right before exams, and relying solely on rote memorization.
4. Faulty Habits: Study behaviors and practices that have been identified as hindrances to
academic success, such as procrastination, excessive multitasking, poor time management,
and lack of organization in study materials.
5. Thorough Practice: Engaging in deliberate and purposeful practice of study materials or
concepts, which involves actively seeking understanding, applying knowledge to solve
problems, and regularly reviewing and reinforcing learning through practice exercises or self-
assessment.
6. Study Environment: The physical and psychological conditions in which students study,
including factors such as a quiet and well-lit space, minimal distractions (e.g., turning off
electronic devices), and an organized study area with necessary materials and resources
readily accessible.
7. Distractions: Any external stimuli or internal thoughts that divert a student's attention
away from their study tasks, such as noise from other people or devices, social media
notifications, or personal worries or concerns.
8. Learning Experience: The subjective perception and cognitive processing of acquiring
knowledge, skills, and understanding through studying, including factors such as
engagement, motivation, interest, and reflection on the learning process.
9. Material and Resources: The specific textbooks, study guides, online resources, lecture
notes, and other materials that students use to support their learning and academic
performance, which should be easily accessible and organized for efficient use.
10. Learning Outcomes: The observable and measurable knowledge, skills, and
competencies that students are expected to demonstrate as a result of their educational
experiences, which can be assessed through quizzes, exams, projects, or other forms of
evaluation.

Review of Related Literature and Studies
The concept of study habits focuses on the student's performance in school. It is the students'
hardwork and effort to achieve better academic performance in their studies. Study habits are part of a
student's everyday life in school. It contributes significantly to the development of knowledge and
perceptual capacities. Study habits tell a person how much he will learn, how far he wants to go, and
how much he wants to learn. These all could be decided with one's study habits throughout life
(Rabia, Mubarak, Tallat & Nasir, 2017).
However, intelligence characteristics such as intellectual capacity are used as predictors of
academic performance. A Significant number of research studies have explored the function of non-
cognitive influences, such as study abilities, inspiration, study behaviors, and attitudes towards
academic [Link] research concluded that healthy study behaviors and optimistic research
attitudes might significantly affect student academic achievement (Sikhwari, 2016).
Any of the research patterns, such as assignments, time distribution, reading and note-taking, and
instructor consultation, affect physics students academic success (Atsuwe & Moses, 2017).
According to Azzopardi and Camilleri (2018), the research patterns and the perceived degree of
complexity of particular subjects are essential for the lecturer to encourage, contributing to higher
academic [Link] outcome revealed no substantial gap between the student's research
patterns and the mean appraisal mark achieved at the end of the course's first year.
Looyeh, Fazelpour, Masoule, Chehrzad and Leili (2017) have shown a substantial association
between students' research patterns and academic success. Determining the student's study habits and
the relationship between their study habits and academic success can boost their academic
achievement and learning habits.
The research 'Changes in the Study Habits of Chinese Adolescents and Reasons Supporting These
Habits–Concentrating on theTransfer Time from Elementary to Junior High School' performed by
Okado, Kida, and Sakai (2018) found a high association between student habits and academic
[Link] research suggested that the study patterns are the explanation for achieving academic
performance.
According to Arieta, Gementiza, and Saco (2017), research patterns play a very significant role
in a student's [Link] performance or loss of each student depends on what kind of research patterns
they [Link] students do not study a lot but reach a higher standard, and some students look a lot
but are unable to achieve a higher level of [Link] indicated that each student's progress should
not focus entirely on the study patterns but rather on the student's skill and intellect. In general, all of
the factors listed appear to influence the academic success of students significantly.
Studies have shown that self-esteem may not substantially affect academic performance in the
analysis of the connection between self-esteem and study habits with student academic success. Still,
study habits do (Alva, 2017).
Goud (2018) showed that students had a favorable attitude towards study habits in his study
entitled "A Study on the Factors Influencing Study Habits of Tenth Class Students in Their Academic
Achievements." The analysis centered on caste, locality, and style of school management on the
academic achievement of tenth-class [Link] research demonstrates that these influences affect
the study behaviors of the [Link] report underlines the value of cultivating healthy study
practices, such as time management.
Case Study Teaching Method is becoming a common teaching strategy in education (Bonney,
2015). In his study entitled "Case Study Teaching Method Improves Student Performance and
Perceptions of Learning Gains," results showed that case studies are significantly more effective than
other methods of teaching styles at increasing student [Link] study showed that case
studies should not be forgotten and should be considered the best teaching method.
