1. Choose one nationalist and discuss his concept of nationalism.
For me, the meaning of nationalism emphasizes the shared identity, culture,
and history of a country. It also promotes a sense of unity or love for the country.
The nationalist that I chose is Jose P. Laurel, Sr. His concept of nationalism is called
assertive nationalism. In this concept, he believed that in order to develop a feeling
of national integrity and a national spirit that would inspire every Filipino to fight for
their rights and liberties and defend them once they were attained, they needed to
establish and practice assertive nationalism. Also, his concept tackled the idea that
in order to assert power, one must attain economic independence by adopting
nationalist policies that would help promote industrialization and democratization of
the economy. In summary, economic power is the key to having political power.
2. What are the factors that greatly influenced the mind of the young Jose
Rizal? How did these shaped his growing nationalism?
Jose Rizal, the Philippines national hero, rose to prominence as an inspiration
whose beliefs and deeds helped spread the flames of Philippine nationalism. The
factors that greatly influence the young mind of Jose Rizal are that they live under
the oppression of Spanish colonialism, where he witnessed the social injustices and
abuses suffered by his countrymen. Through these experiences, he ignited the
hearts and minds of his fellow Filipinos to fight for nationalism. Also, his writings
and literacy, like El Filibusterismo, Noli me Tangere, A la Juventud Filipina, and
many more, were his way of fighting. With the use of pen and paper, his writings
acted as a spark to bring Filipino people together and to raise national
consciousness.
Jose Rizal's mother played an important role in shaping his nationalism.
Teodora Alonso Realonda stimulated his intellectual curiosity and gave him the tools
he needed to succeed academically. As he defined her, “a woman of more than
ordinary culture," which means she possessed good character and redefined
culture.
3. Read and analyze Rizal's work, "A La Juventud Filipina" (Sa Kabataang
Pilipino) using the 6Cs of historical analysis.
The 6 C's of historical analysis are citation, content, context, communication,
connector, and conclusion. Jose Rizal wrote “La Juventud Filipina” at the age of 18.
He wrote this at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila as a literary contest piece.
This poem recognizes Filipino youth as capable of bringing change and progress to
the country. It encourages them to believe that they have the potential to do great
things and to fill their young minds with genius ideas. Rizal was 18 when he wrote
this poem. They are under the oppression of Spanish colonialism, where they are
mistreated and suffer social injustices. Jose Rizal addressed the poem to the Filipino
youth, saying that the journey of the youth's intellectual greatness is within
ourselves to make change in the world. One of the lines that struck me the most is
"Itaas ang inyong malinis na noo sa Araw na ito kabataang Pilipino," which says
that being Filipino is something that one should be proud of because it is the
identity of a person and it is something that makes an individual who they are
today, also the youth is the future of the country. Jose Rizal portrays that Filipino
youth should attain their maximum potential by using their skills and talents for the
growth of their country. It inspires the youth to liberate Filipinos from ignorance and
embrace freedom.
