1. Describe one way in which biology affects our society.

➢ Biology affects our society in many ways. The most evident impact is through
medical advancements and health care. Through the years, new discoveries of
cures and treatments for various diseases have been made that have improved
healthcare outcomes, saved lives, and prevented diseases from spreading as early
as possible.
2. Summarize the characteristics of living things.
➢ Based on the discussion, there are 7 characteristics of living things:
o Organization and cells, cells are the basic units of life, and their
organization into tissues, organs, and organ systems enables complex
biological functions.
o Metabolism is the process of converting energy and materials from the
environment through chemical reactions within an organism.
o Response to Stimuli is the ability of organisms to detect and react to
changes in their environment.
o Homeostasis is the process of maintaining stable internal conditions
despite external environmental changes.
o Reproduction is simply about the process of producing new organisms.
o Growth and Development are processes in which living organisms, such
as humans, undergo growth and development, which leads to maturity.
o Change Through Time or Evolution is crucial for living organisms’
survival in a changing world.
3. Summarize the main steps of the scientific method.
➢ The main steps of the scientific methods: First, make observations and formulate
questions. Second, create a hypothesis as a proposed explanation. Third, make
predictions based on the hypothesis. Fourth, conduct experiments to test the
hypothesis. Fifth, analyze the data and draw conclusions. Sixth, communicate
the results to the scientific community for review and validation.
4. Explain the relationship between enzymes and activation energy.
➢ Enzymes lower the activation energy of a chemical reaction by stabilizing the
transition state, making the reaction occur more readily. This allows reactions to
happen at a faster rate and under milder conditions, which is essential for the
efficiency of biological processes.
5. Identify the solute and solvent in cup of instant coffee with sugar.
➢ In a cup of instant coffee with sugar, the solute would be the sugar since it is the
substance that dissolves in the coffee. On the other hand, the instant coffee is the
liquid that dissolves the sugar, so the instant coffee is the solvent.
6. Describe the structure of a water molecule.
➢ The structure of a water molecule is V-shaped; it is made up of one oxygen atom
that is bonded to two hydrogen atoms. The oxygen atom, which carries a slightly
negative charge, sits in the middle, while the hydrogen atoms, which carry a slight
positive charge, stick to the oxygen atom, making the whole thing look bent or
angled. This makes water a polar molecule.
7. Differentiate organic and inorganic compounds.
➢ Organic compounds are made up of carbon bonded to hydrogen atoms which are
typically found in living organisms. Inorganic compound, on the other hand, do
not have carbon-hydrogen bonds and they can be found in both living and non-
living organisms.
8. Relate properties of carbon to the formation of organic compounds.
➢ The carbon properties such as its versatility, bonding capacity, isomerism, and
ability to form stable covalent bonds, enable the formation of a wide variety of
organic compounds with diverse structures and functions.
9. Summarize how functional groups help determine the properties of organic compounds.
➢ Functional groups help to determine the properties of organic compounds as they
determine their chemical properties and reactivity, influencing solubility, acidity,
stability, and other characteristics when they participate in chemical reactions
and interact with other molecules.
10. Compare how organic compounds are built to how they are broken down.
➢ Organic compounds are built by forming covalent bonds through synthetic or
biochemical processes. They are broken down through processes such as
hydrolysis, oxidation, or combustion, with the help of enzymes or external
factors.
