MODULE ONE
• what is biochemical engineering?
• How is it different from chemical engineering? The interrelationship
between it and other disciplines
Module 1: Learning outcomes: Leaners should be
able to
• Compare and contrast biochemical engineering with the orthodoxy
chemical engineering discipline
• Vividly describe the multidisciplinary nature of biochemical
engineering discipline
What is Biochemical Engineering?
• Biochemical Engineering is a branch of Chemical Engineering which
applies technology advances to biological materials.
• It combines knowledge of biology, chemistry and engineering to
create products from raw materials and develop the processes for
achieving this
• Biochemical Engineering develop usable tangible products using the
knowledge of biology, chemistry and engineering.
• It solves problems related to materials, systems or processes that
interact with humans, plants, animals, microorganisms or biological,
materials
What are the differences and similarities between
biochemistry and biochemical engineering?

• Biochemical engineering deals with the various bioreactors that are

used in the manufacturing of food stuffs, pharmaceuticals and waste
treatment, while chemical engineering involves manufacturing of
finished products using raw materials by applying chemical and/or
physical operations; biochemistry ………………………..
BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING – the
multidisciplinary nature of biochemical engineering discipline
