TITLE: Exploring Natural Pigments: Mayana (Coleus blumei) extract as an alternative
for Synthetic Ink
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Markers are useful in a variety of ways. It is also a tool for calligraphy, painting,
graffiti and much more. Markers are also essential for students in completing and
presenting their reports easily. However, marker’s inks are often formed of synthetic
materials like petroleum and chemical solvents. Fossil fuels and other dangerous
chemicals that can re-enter the environment are the main ingredients used for
producing synthetic ink. Solvents that release toxic gases known as volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) are used in the process of producing them, and that can be harmful
to humans (James, A., 2021).
Mayana (Coleus blumei) is a garden plant known for its brightly colored foliage
and have a wide variety of leaf sizes and overall shapes. They are also herbal plants, that
used as a home remedy for many illnesses such as cough, cold and fever. Plant
pigments, according to Liu et al., (2018), are great sources of edible and organic inks
that can be used to write on paper. Natural inks are considered eco-friendly because
they are derived from natural resources like plant leaves, root, fruits, and minerals
sources (Ghosh, S., & Malik, S. 2019). The use of turmeric and beetroot extracts as
highlighter were effective for highlighting texts (Huda, et al.,2017). In the study of
(Agape et al., 2018) Mayana (C. blumei) and San Francisco (Codiaeum variegatum)
extract will be effectively used as a natural and affordable alternative inks for markers.
However, there is a need for thorough studies that directly compare Mayana ink
with commonly used inks. Such as comparative research could provide valuable insights
into how Mayana (C. blumei) ink performs in terms of absorption, color, odor and
adhesion on different surfaces when compared to synthetic inks. Closing this research
gap Poothrough detailed comparative studies would not only help consumers and
industries make informed choices but also promote the widespread use of Mayana inks
as sustainable option to synthetic counterparts.
Consumer, calligraphers and students all have a demand for ink made with
alternative ingredients. Therefore, Mayana (C. blumei) has a lot of potential in creating a
substitute marker ink.
Statement of the Problem
The main objective of the study is to test the efficacy of Mayana (C. blumei)
extract as an ingredient to produce marker inks. Specifically, it aims to answer the
following questions:
1. How effective is Mayana extract in terms of:
a. Absorption
b. Color
c. Odor
d. Adhesion on different surfaces
Significance of the Study
This study will be conducted to find out the effects of alternative ink for markers
such as the extract of Mayana (C. blumei).
The result of this study will be beneficial to the students, teachers and future
researchers.
This study will also be beneficial to all calligraphers, artists and students. The
study will give them advantages such as to lessen their expenses, eco- friendly and
customizability because different plants offer a variety of colors and properties, allowing
for a wide range of inks and colors and effects without the need for synthetic dyes or
additives. Organic ink also reduces the risk of exposure to chemicals from commercial
inks that keeps all the users safe.
Definition of Terms
Alternative Ink- An ink made from non- traditional materials, such as natural pigments,
as opposed to conventional inks made with synthetic dyes and solvents. Imagine ink
made from flowers instead of chemicals.
Extract- A concentrated preparation obtained from a plant or other material by
removing the active ingredients using solvents or other methods. Think of it like
squeezing out the essence of something, like juice from fruit.
Markers- Pens with felt tips containing ink, used for writing, drawing and highlighting.
The pens you use to write and color with.
Natural Pigments- Pigments derived from natural sources such as plants, animals or
minerals.
Pigments- Colored substances that are impossible to solve in water and other solvents,
they are used to impart color to materials like paints, inks and textiles. They are like tiny
color particles floating around in liquid.
