Effects of Electromagnetic Waves on Health

The document discusses the effects of electromagnetic waves on living things and the environment. It defines electromagnetic radiation and different types like ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. It explains how our bodies absorb electromagnetic radiation as heat from sunlight. While non-ionizing radiation like sunlight is less harmful, ionizing radiation in higher frequencies can damage cells. The document contains tasks to classify sources of electromagnetic radiation, understand applications and effects on health, and create a poster showing the positive and negative effects on living things.

Effects Electromagnetic Waves on Living Things and Environment

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

1. Explain the effects of Electromagnetic (EM) radiation on living things and the
environment(S10-FE-11e-f-49)

Objectives:
1.1 Explain the effects of Electromagnetic Waves Application on Living
things and the Environment.
1.2 Evaluate the risk and benefits derived from the application of
Electromagnetic wave.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Directions: Read the given questions then choose the correct answer from the

Choices: Radiation, Non-ionizing radiation, Ionizing radiation, Wavelength, Frequency,

Energy.

_____1. The distance between identical points(adjacent crests) of wave form signal
propagated in space or a long wire.
_____2. Is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves.
_____3. Is a type of energy released by atom in the form of electromagnetic waves.
_____4. It is the number of concurrences as repeating event per unit of time.
_____5. It is define as the capacity for doing work.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Our bodies can absorb electromagnetic radiation as energy, meaning molecules in the tissue
directly exposed to radiation get excited. In other words, they heat up. This is exactly what
happens when we sunbathe. The molecules in our skin are excited by waves in the sunlight
and thus sunshine feels warm on our skin.

The heat caused by the non-ionizing ray of sunlight is considered less harmful. The energy
emitted by electronic devices is magnitudes lower than that of the sun. Energy is directly
proportional to the radiation’s frequency. Ultraviolet light — the kind that has a high potential to

cause skin cancer — has a frequency of around 10 to the power of 16, while low intensity
microwaves found with cell phones have a radiation of around 10 to the power of 9.

conclusion on the effects of Electromagnetic Radiation in human’s health.

Let’s Apply

Forms of Radiation and their Uses

Radio Your radio captures radio waves emitted by radio stations, bringing
your favorite tunes. Radio waves are also emitted by stars and gases
in space.
Microwave Microwave radiation will cook your popcorn in just a few minutes, but
is also used by astronomers to learn about the structure of
nearby galaxies.
Infrared Night vision goggles pick up the infrared light emitted by our skin and
objects with heat. In space, infrared light helps us map
the dust between stars.
Visible Our eyes detect visible light . Fireflies, light bulbs, and stars all emit
visible light.

Ultraviolet Ultraviolet radiation is emitted by the Sun and are the reason skin
tans and burns. "Hot" objects in space emit UV radiation as well.

X-ray A dentist uses X-rays to image your teeth, and airport security uses
them to see through your bag. Hot gases in the Universe. also emit X-
rays
Gamma rays Doctors use gamma-ray imaging to see inside your body. The biggest
gamma-ray generator of all is the Universe.
