Elementary Music Harmony Lesson

This document provides a detailed lesson plan for teaching harmony in elementary music class. The objectives are for students to understand what harmony is, appreciate its importance and forms, and identify music with the same chords. The lesson plan outlines preliminary activities like greetings and prayer, a review of the previous lesson, and motivation by unscrambling music-related words. The core discussion defines harmony as different musical voices combining into a cohesive whole. It introduces the three main forms of harmony: diatonic (notes from one scale), non-diatonic (notes not from the same scale), and atonal (no tonal center). Examples of each are played and discussed to help students recognize the different forms.

one of a series of directions (such as

C. Discussion

Am I clear everybody? Yes teacher
PLAYING MUSIC (Learner’s is listening)
After hearing that music we’ve been
played a while ago, what did you observe
about it?
Anyone? Miss Ampinon? The songs we listened Ma’am has
been join together or the music we’ve
been heared has two or more songs
that is being combined to form as
one.
Okay very good Miss Ampinon.
Then what is harmony children?

Harmony is the composite product

when individual musical voices
group together to form a cohesive
whole.
Okay children very good.

Think of an orchestra: the flute player

may be playing one note, the violinist
plays a different note, and the trombonist
plays yet a different note. But when their
individual parts are heard together,
harmony is created.
So, when different notes are being
combined or joined together we can build
what we called the harmony.

Did you understand children of what I am Yes teacher

saying?
DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN TEACHING MUSIC IN ELEMENTARY GRADE (TM)

What is harmony again? Anyone?

Miss Rapas? Harmony is the composite product
when individual musical voices
group together to form a cohesive
whole.

Okay very good Miss Rapas.

Let us clap our hands for Miss Rapas. Children are clapping

Okay since we all understand what

Harmony is, let us now proceed to its three
forms.

Harmony takes many forms. Here are the

three most popular and important forms
of harmony.

So the first most popular forms of

harmony is the Diatonic Harmony.

In your own understanding class,

what is diatonic harmony?
Miss Bugador? For me teacher, Diatonic harmony is
a chords or notes that can be found in
one scale.

Okay very good Miss Bugador. Children are clapping

Let us clap our hands for her.

Okay when we say Diatonic

harmony, like what Miss Bugador
said earlier it is music where the
notes and chords all trace back to
a master scale.

So if you’re in the key of Ab major, all the

notes and chords you play will be drawn
from the seven notes comprising the Ab
major scale. And if you’re not sure what
key you’re in, check the “key signature”—
the list of sharps and flats that appears at
the beginning of each system of musical
notation.

I have here an example of diatonic

harmony and please do familiarize of what
diatonic is.

PLAYING MUSIC Children are listening

What Diatonic Harmony again children? It is music where the notes and
chords all trace back to a master
scale.

Okay very good.

Now who can define what Non-diatonic is?

Anyone? Miss Linaga? For me Ma’am if the diatonic is a
music where the notes and chords all
trace back to a master scale, the non-
diatonic harmony for me is the notes
or chords that doesn’t have the same
master scale.

Okay very good Miss Linaga. Let us clap Childrena re clapping

our hands for her.
DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN TEACHING MUSIC IN ELEMENTARY GRADE (TM)

As what Miss Linaga said, the non-diatonic

harmony introduces notes that aren’t all
part of the same master scale. This form
of harmony is completely idiomatic to jazz,
but it appears in all forms of music. Let’s
say you’re in the key of Ab major and you
play a Bb7 chord.

That chord contains the note D, which is

definitely not in the Ab major scale. It
sounds a bit edgy, but it also tends to be
quite memorable.

I have here an example of non-diatonic

harmony class. Please listen for you to
understand very well and for you to be
familiar of what non-diatonic is.

PLAYING MSUIC Children are listening

What is Non-diatonic again Non-diatonic harmony teacher

children? introduces notes that aren’t all aprt of
the same master scale.

Okay very good children. Since

everybody understand what is
diatonic and non-diatonic is, let us
now proceed to the third forms
which is the atonal harmony.

For you children, in your own

understanding, what is Atonal
harmony?
Miss Gasulas? Atonality in its broadest sense is music
that lacks a tonal center, or key

Okay very good Miss Gasulas.

Thank you for that wonderful idea.

So, when we say Atonal Harmony this

form of harmony doesn’t have a tonal
center: it isn’t built on a scale that’s major
or minor, or that has an identifiable root. In
classical music, atonal music was largely
the brainchild of composer Arnold
Schoenberg.

So I have here again an example of Atonal

Harmony. Kindly listen to it for you to be
able to remember the sign of what is
atonal harmony is. Am I clear? Yes teacher

PLAYING MUSIC Children are listening

What is Atonal harmony again Atonal harmony teacher is a form of

children? harmony that doesn’t have a tonal
center.

Okay very good children.

Let us all clap our hands for the (children are clapping)
active participation of everybody.

Let us now give a loud clap for each and

every one for the wonderful cooperation (children are clapping)
and participation of everybody.

Let us always remember class that we

must know what harmony is and
appreciate its forms. With harmony we can
build music with different chords and
notes. So we must appreciate and give
value to harmony and the forms of it.

Is everybody understand? Yes teacher

Okay let us all clap our hand again

together for the active participation of
everybody.

Okay let us proceed now to our activity for
