BIOCHEMISTRY
MEASUREMENT OF pH USING pH Paper
INTRODUCTION
pH paper measures basic, acidic, or neutral solutions by observing color changes in
solutions due to chemicals. In our activity, we used pH paper to verify the acidity of each
solution that we used, to determine what are the level of acidity of each solution, we used pH
measurement. It is a pH meter that measures hydrogen-ion activity in water-based solutions. To
use the pH paper, the user simply dips the strip into the solution and we observe the color
change. The color of the paper is then compared to a color chart provided with the paper to
determine the pH of the solution. pH paper is also commonly used in a variety of settings,
including laboratories, schools, and Homes, to measure the pH of liquids such as water, urine,
and saliva.

As we have observed for HCL (Hydrochloric acid), the Acidity of each solution
Increases, and its pH level Decreases. And for NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide), some substances
are acidic while others are basic, as we increase the number of NaOH drops, each solution
reacts. The more NaOH we add the more it increases the pH level.
INSIGHTS
Knowing the pH level of a liquid is important because it can provide insights into
the chemical properties of the solution. pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a
solution, with a pH of 7 being neutral, and values below 7 indicating alkalinity. The pH of
pure water is 7, which is considered neutral. The pH of tap water or bottled water may
vary depending on the source and treatment processes used. It is important to measure the
pH of water to ensure that it is safe for drinking and other uses. Soft drinks are typically
acidic and have a pH between 2 and 4, depending on the type of drink. Overall, measuring
the pH of a liquid is an important step in ensuring its safety, quality, and suitability for its
intended use.
