Tutorial 4

This document provides information about waste treatment processes and includes 3 practice questions. It introduces tertiary treatment and solid waste management topics. It lists the names of 3 lecturers and provides an academic year. It then presents 3 practice questions (Q1, Q2, Q3) related to activated sludge processes, anaerobic reactors, and equalization tank sizing respectively, including relevant system parameters and data in tables to help solve the questions.

Lecturer Name: Dr Nitin Raut

Dr Amal Al Saadi
Prof Rajamohan Natarajan
Academic Year: 2023-2024
Q1

An Asp is operating with the conditions described for the system 1.2 and 3 in Table Q1.

The conditions include the average influent flow, aeration tank volume and MLSS

concentration, return activated sludge flow recycle ratio and TSS concentration and the

secondary clarifier effluent TSS concentration. Wasting is from the return activated sludge

line leaving the bottom of the secondary clarifier.

What should be the average daily sludge rate in m3/d to maintain an SRT of 10 d.

If 1/10th of the aeration volume is waste each day to maintain the SRT what is the waste

volume in m3/d and what is the actual SRT

Table Q1

Parameter Unit 1 2 3
Flow rate m3/d 4000 10000 5000
Aeration tank volume m3/d 2000 4000 5000
Aeration tank MLSS concentration mg/l 3000 3500 3000
Clarifier effluent TSS concentration mg/l 10.0 10.0 10.0
Return sludge recycle ration 0.5 1.0 0.75
Return sludge TSS concentration mg/l 9000 7000 7000

Q2

A brewery wastewater with a flowrate of 1000 ,3/d and COD of 4000 mg/L is to be treated

at 35 0C in a 4 m UASB which contains cross flow plastic packing, with the aim of 90

percent COD removal. Assume that the attached growth SRT is 30 d,

Determine

The reactor volume and dimensions

The methane gas production rate and the

Effluent TSS concentration. mg/L

Q3

Using the information given in the data presented in table estimate the inline volume

required to reduce the variation of BOD mass loading rate between the peak and

minimum from the existing ration of 25.8.1: to a peak value of 5:1
