HISTORY
Established in 1964 by Rinaldi's family, SAPI's head office is located in
Castelnuovo Rangone near to Modena.
Even today the 100% ownership of SAPI Group is being held by Rinaldi’s
family with its third generation.
SAPI’s location, in the middle of an area with the highest concentration of
slaughter houses and meat-processing plants of the whole Italy, which
ensured an abundant supply of fresh residues, enabled the company to
obtain the best raw materials and produce high-quality products, obtaining
therefore satisfactory commercial results.
Over the years investments in new production techniques and attention to
quality control - in an industry which has in the meantime become very
competitive - have enabled SAPI to keep up with the times and increase its
market share.

ADVANCEMENTS
The introduction of an exclusive production process (still unique in the industry
after several years) enabled the company to enter foreign markets, especially
those where, owing to climatic conditions, there was a need for products which
retain their analytical characteristics unaltered.
Sapi animal proteins are characterized by a low fat content with the great
advantage that the product can be stored for long periods in dried warehouse
avoiding any deterioration. The shelf-life of the product is also guaranteed by the
new packaging system (25-27kg/plastic bag) which protects the product from
external agents.
The technology used to obtain low fat animal protein is the same used for soya
bean meal. Therefore we can guarantee products free from salmonella and
pathogenic agents, light colour and very fine particle sizes. The meal obtained is
easy to transport, unload and mix with other formula ingredients.
OPERATIONS&TREATMENTS
TRANSFORMATION PROCESS OF BY-PRODUCTS OF CATEGORY 3
• Raw material of category 3 is loaded inside buried metallic tanks which have on the bottom a group of transportation screws, which let the by-
products flow to a big central cochlea, which feeds first a crusher and then the processing plant.
• The crusher has to shred the raw material into pieces of no more than 30mm, in accordance with the method of transformation 4 ( Chapter III of
the attachment V of Reg. 1774/2002 CE), and it is formed of a metallic till with a great thickness supplied with a double series of fixed anvils
and of a rotor on which are welded sharpened teeth. Both the teeth and the anvils have the surface covered with STELLITE, material extremely
resistant to abrasion and corrosion. The by-products that get into the crusher pass through the existing space between the rotor’s teeth and the
anvils, that is less than 30mm in order to guarantee that the swine raw material will be of the right size.
• The crushed material, thanks to the metallic cochlear, gets inside one of the two cookers, plants that work continuously, manufactured and
supplied by DUPPS EUROPE.
• Each one of these plants extract the fat through the dehydration process (evaporation of about 50% of moisture) achieved through the transit of
the raw material on a heated shell , inside which rotate a bundle of tubes full of vapour at 240°, fed at a pressure of 7-10 bar that causes the
warm and fusion of the raw material introduced.
• Inside the cookers it is kept a constant level of liquid fat at a temperature between 100° and 140° which causes the evaporation of the moisture
of the animal tissue introduced.
• The vapour produced is aspirated and sent trough metallic piping to a thermal combustor or, alternatively, it is condensed and sent to the
depuration plant of the water’s factory.
• The dehydrated material gets out from the front of the cookers, passes through a draining section where it loses a part of the fat and feeds one
of the five continuous press where there is a further mechanical extraction of the fat that is still in the said material.
OPERATIONS&TREATMENTS
SEMIPROCESSED PRODUCTS
The withdrawal of semi processed products in the plant in Castelnuovo Rangone is
done from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is divided into two
phases:
1. Entrance of semi processed products: two employees are responsible for the
weighing of goods and for checking the transportation documents, with the aim to
verify that the products are of category 3, that the goods comes from an authorized
plant and that the truck is in accordance with the regulations. In order to be effective
with the controls, it has been created a program “Programma di prerequisito
operativo” (PRP Op.), which defines the responsibilities, methodologies and frequency
of the monitoring and possible corrective actions.
2. Discharge and storage of semi processed products: once the reliability of the
products is verified, the truck can get inside the plant and the meat and bone meal
coming from the outside is mixed with the one produced internally and prepared for
the extraction process.
OPERATIONS&TREATMENTS
EXTRACTION PROCESS OF FAT
In the solvent extraction plant it is possible to collect the residual
fat still present in the proteinic material after the cooking and
mechanical pressing process, using a strong solvent like hexane.
Conferring to this recovered extra-quantity of fat an added value.
The ultimate defatted meal will be stored and ready to be packed
and to be shipped.
SAPI’S STORAGE
More than 10,000 mt of storaging capacity

to the research and development of new technology enabling animal fats and used
cooking oil to be used in the production of Energy and fuels.
Nowadays the group counts several productive factories all over the world and is
listed amongst the top five groups in the sector internationally, measured both by
turnover and by quantity of animal residues processed annually.
The dynamism displayed by the founder of the group and by the second and third
generation of owners will continue to guarantee into the future the search for
that continuous growth at a global level which is necessary to meet the challenges
of ever sharper competition.
