Abstract:
Video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment among young people worldwide.
While it can provide many benefits, including improving cognitive skills, socialization, and stress
relief, excessive gaming can have negative impacts on physical health. This review aims to
explore the relationship between video gaming and physical health in young people. Excessive
video gaming has been linked to increased sedentary behavior, leading to a higher risk of
obesity, back pain, and other musculoskeletal disorders (Koepp & Gunn, 2019; Suchert et al.,
2015). Furthermore, long hours of gaming can cause eye strain, headaches, and sleep disorders,
affecting overall health and well-being (Koepp & Gunn, 2019). Moreover, the addictive nature
of video gaming can lead to neglect of other essential activities, such as exercise and social
interaction, which are crucial for physical health (Granic et al., 2014). The use of violent video
games has also been associated with aggressive behavior, which may lead to physical
altercations and injuries (Gentile & Reimer, 2017). In conclusion, while video gaming can
provide benefits to young people, excessive use can have negative impacts on physical health.
Parents, educators, and healthcare providers need to educate young people on the importance
of limiting screen time, maintaining physical activity, and engaging in healthy habits to prevent
these adverse effects. Further research is necessary to understand the long-term consequences
of video gaming on physical health and develop effective interventions to mitigate these
negative impacts.
