EOL#1: Shadowing Judge Becker
I had the eye-opening experience shadowing Judge Scott Becker with McCathern, on
October 26th, 2023 at both his office at The Star, and on the field. Judge Becker is currently
working on a 2+ year divorce case that includes the custody of son and various assets. Even more
valuable than Judge Becker’s incredible advice during our interview at his office, was the
experience to observe how he dealt with clients, his ease of communication and professionalism,
and understanding the logistics of a case that requires the expertise of a family lawyer. This day
was crucial to showing me the real work of a lawyer, although Judge Becker recommends I
experience a “boring but normal” day at his office, answering emails and contacting clients.
Nomatter, I left inspired and motivated to earn my place in this professional world.
During the interview, Judge Becker answered my questions with ease and interesting
input. He explained the life lessons he had learned in the early stages of his practice, as well as
the differences between his profession as a judge vs an attorney. Within 6 pages of notes, I took
away how law school will prepare me for how to learn, while my experience being more crucial.
Judge Becker has extensive experience with the ethics of Law, dealing with clients/lawyers,
which I will apply as I navigate the specific culture of law. This information will guide me to
power through the difficult early years of practicing law, and will act as my guide through the
learning curve.
On the field, I shadowed Judge Becker as he met with a client of several years, as his ex-
wife and her attorney joined us at a property owned by Judge Becker’s client, of which the party
would observe the value of the property and its items. Judge Becker was an example of

professionalism, treating the situation with care and concern for all involved. Afterwards at
lunch, he explained the technicalities of events discussed by the two attorneys, and how the rest
of the case might unfold in the future. It was crucial to view all of the soft skills we have learned
in class being used in real time, as well as understand the need for quick problem solving and
strategic action on the part of the attorney representing a client.
Overall, I was greatly inspired by learning from Judge Becker’s actions as an attorney, as
well as his advice on the profession. Shadowing Judge Becker will be a crucial part of my
journey in studying law, and I will value this experience for many years to come.
