Rizal
Module 2 Section 2
Worksheet 5
Name Olacao, Erika Blaire N.
Section Code SBK
Instructions: Read the passage below. Afterwards, answer the following questions.
One of the stories that Teodora Alonzo told Jose Rizal was that of the moth and the flame. In the
story, an old moth warned a young moth not to come close to a lighted candle because it might
cause the young moth's death. However, the young moth was so attracted to the candle's light
and warmth, so it disobeyed the old moth's advice. The young moth flew too close to the candle's
flame. Its wings caught fire and burned, and the moth died. While listening to the story, Jose was
watching the moths flying around the lamp on their table. Just like in the story, one of the moths
flew near the flame and burned its wings. But that was not how it died, it fell into the pool of
coconut oil at the bottom of the lamp where it drowned and died.
Questions:
1. Research on how the story of the moth and the flame shaped Rizal's social and political
ideas?
Jose Rizal's perspective on various parts of discipline and how the narrative represents
the societal difficulties that were prevalent at the time changed when his mother
Teodora Alonzo read to him the tale of the moth and the flame. Even if an adult moth
told a young moth not to come close to the candle because doing so could result in the
young moth's death, the narrative nonetheless helped Rizal understand how we should
see our society. However, the baby moth ignored the adult moth's advice and kept
flying toward the candle, where it burned its wings. With that, it demonstrated the
variety of options available to us in life. Like Rizal, who continued to work tirelessly in
order to save lives.
2. What are the instances when Rizal manifested a social and political character?
As the government's partners in bringing its affairs to the people, including the
provision of fundamental services and the execution of its daily functions, civil
servants play a crucial role in public administration. Government employees and
officials are frequently blamed for failing to address the concerns of the general people.
Up to this point, corruption has been a problem in the bureaucracy. There is hardly any
respect for those who work in government. Given that the Philippines has routinely
ranked among the most corrupt nations in Asia, we cannot hold the populace
responsible for the widespread belief that corruption permeates all levels of
government.
The teachings of what is referred to as the philosophy of Jose Rizal were a product and
composite of the principles of Jose Rizal were a result and synthesis of the
Enlightenment philosophy's teachings. The eighteenth century in Europe officially
began at the beginning of that philosophical era, which lasted until the nineteenth
century.

Exercise 2.2.3 Rizal’s Love for Language
Instruction: Read Rizal’s Poem below:
To My Fellow Youth
Whenever people of a country truly love
The language which by heav'n they were taught to use
That country also surely liberty pursue
As does the bird which soars to freer space above.
For language is the final judge and referee
Upon the people in the land where it holds sway;
In truth our human race resembles in this way
The other living beings born in liberty.
Whoever knows not how to love his native tongue
Is worse than any best or evil smelling fish.
To make our language richer ought to be our wish
The same as any mother loves to feed her young.
Tagalog and the Latin language are the same
And English and Castilian and the angels' tongue;
And God, whose watchful care o'er all is flung,
Has given us His blessing in the speech we calim,
Our mother tongue, like all the highest that we know
Had alphabet and letters of its very own;
But these were lost-by furious waves were overthrown
Like bancas in the stormy sea, long years ago..
Task: Share your experiences or insights on how the youth today shows confidence and interest
in using their mother tongue. Do the youth still value the language they were brought up with?
Explain your thoughts on the space provided below.
The youth today are influenced by many languages because of the movies that they are
watching, based on my observation of my classmates and friends here. But in our home town,
it’s very different. Most of the people there are using the language, which is what they were
brought up with, because it is far from the city and all people are just watching Filipino
movies. I observe that movies have a big impact on influencing our mother tongue.
