SECTION A-READING 10 Marks

1. Read the following passage carefully and do as directed:

Professor Hawking’s Funny Bone

Para 1- Stephen Hawking was a cosmologist and physicist. Though he

was wheelchair bound, paralysed and dependent on a computerized
voice system for communication, he did not let it affect his personal life
and work. Hawking, the man who changed our understanding of the
universe, is also the man who famously said, ‘’ Life would be tragic if it
wasn’t so funny.’’

Para 2-Indeed, his wit and humour have influenced much of his
interactions with scientists, interviewers and fans. He once hosted a
party for time travellers, but with a twist- he didn’t send out any
invitations until after the time of the party. He made elaborate
preparations and laid out special food for his guests from the future. The
world renowned ambassador for science even filmed the party and
posted the video on social media platforms. He waited to see if anyone
would turn up to prove that travelling back in time was possible. “I sat
there a long time,’’ Professor Hawking said. “No one came.’’

Page 1 of 7
Para 3-Once the BBC science correspondent Pallab Ghosh went to
interview Professor Hawking and found himself at the receiving end of
one of his jokes. This was Ghosh’s first interview with the legendary
scientist and he was keen to make it a memorable one. While they were
setting up the equipment, the cameraman said that the room needed
better lighting. He wanted to make some adjustments, so he pointed to
an electric cord and asked, “Is it all right if I unplug this?’’

Para 4-Without waiting for an answer, the cameraman unplugged the

cord. Immediately, all kinds of sirens went off. Professor Hawking
slumped forward in his wheel chair. Pallab Ghosh was terrified that they
had inadvertently switched off something crucial to the equipment that
Professor Hawking used.

Para 5-They rushed forward to help Professor Hawking and discovered

that he was bent with laughter! They realized that the celebrity scientist
had played a practical joke on them and was now laughing at their
worried expressions. Pallab Ghosh certainly achieved his goal of making
the interview memorable.
Stephen Hawking has been adored for many reasons, not least of which
is the cheer and light heartedness that he spread wherever he went.

FRIENDS AND FLATTERERS

Every one that flatters thee
Is no friend in misery.
Words are easy, like the wind;
Faithful friends are hard to find.

Every man will be thy friend

Whilst thou have wherewith to spend;
But if store of crowns be scant,
No man shall supply thy want.

If that one be prodigal

Bountiful they will him call
And with such like flattering,
‘Pity but he were a king’

He that is thy friend indeed,

He will help thee in thy need:
If thou sorrow, he will weep;
If thou wake, he cannot sleep;

Thus of every grief in heart

He with thee do bear a part.
These are certain signs to know
Faithful friend from flattering foe.
