VI Draw a neat and labelled circuit diagram of a torch. 2x2=4

(Refer Page No: 204)
VII Read the passage and answer the following questions. 1x4=4
In general, ecosystems can be divided into two types of factors, abiotic factors and biotic
factors. Both types contribute to the type and number of organisms (living things), which can
inhabit an ecosystem. But what is the difference between them? The term biotic means living or
having lived. Biotic factors are basically organisms and the remains of organisms. Examples of
biotic factors would include a frog, a leaf, a dead tree, or a piece of wood. The term abiotic
means non-living, or never having lived; abiotic factors are non-living, non-cellular, and
inorganic materials which contribute to an environment. Examples of abiotic factors would
include gold, rock, bicycle, brick, and cement.
Both types of factors affect the types of organisms that exist in an environment. For instance, in
the desert, the lack of water (an abiotic factor) prevents the existence of most trees, which need
steady rainfall. On the other hand, the numerous rodents, (mice) etc. which live in the desert (a
biotic factor) enable a population of predatory coyotes to survive in this harsh climate.

1 According to the text, what is a biotic factor? The term biotic means living or having lived.

2 Based on the definitions above, identify each of the following as biotic (B) or abiotic (A).
i) the sand in a desert (A)
ii) pollen from a plant (B)
iii)the bacteria in a lake (B)
iv)pollution from an oil refinery (A)

3 Explain why a dead tree would still be a biotic factor, even though it is no longer alive.

Dead tree is considered a biotic factor, because the definition of biotic factor includes organisms
that lived as well as their remains.
4 How do both abiotic and biotic factors influence the types of organisms in an environment?
By climate and adaptations
VIII Choose the correct answer: 4x1=4

3. Shadow is never inverted. 3. Image can be both straight or inverted.
2 State two uses of conductor and an insulator of electricity.
Two uses of conductor are
1)The wires used for carrying electricity are made of conducting materials. This allows
electricity to be transported from one place to another.
2)Coils of conductor form inductor or transformers. Coils of conductors around cores make
electromagnets.
Two uses of insulator are
1)The bodies of electrical switches, sockets, plugs and handles of an electric iron are all made of
insulating materials.
2)Handles of an electric iron, refrigerators are all made of insulating materials.
3 Compass is better than stars used for sailors to identify the directions. Why?
Compass is better than stars for sailors to identify the directions for several reasons.
a. The stars are not visible at daytime or in cloudy weather
b. There is only on star that is staying in the same direction (almost), the Polar star.
c. If you are not able to use the Polar star you need a nautical almanac and the correct time
d. You can also use a compass in the woods with a lot of tree cover There are probably a lot of
other good reasons. But once in a while it can be good to check you compass against the Polar
star or another known direction
Section B

XI Give reasons: 10x2=20

1 A freely suspended magnet aligns itself in the north – south direction.
A freely suspended magnet points in the north south direction as the North Pole of the earth
attracts the south pole of the magnet. On the other hand, South Pole of the earth attracts the
north pole of the magnet. So, a freely suspended magnet always points in the north south
direction.

2 All circular motions are usually periodic but all periodic motions are not circular.
All periodic motions are not circular because they are not similar to each other. The motion
repeats itself of the time to perform the motion of the periodic.

3 Water is not a nutrient, yet it is extremely important for our survival.

Water is indeed not considered a nutrient because it does not provide calories or essential
nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, or minerals. However, it is absolutely vital
for our survival for several reasons like hydration, digestion and temperature regulation etc.

4 Dark patches are seen on the ground when sunlight passes through dense tree.
When we pass under a tree covered with large number of leaves, we notice small patches of sun
light under it. These circular images are, in fact, pinhole images of the Sun. The gaps between
the leaves, act as the pin holes. These gaps are all kinds of irregular shapes, but, we can see
circular images of the Sun.

5 Filament of an electric bulb is made up of tungsten and not any other material.
Pure tungsten has properties like highest melting point (3695 K), lowest vapor pressure, and
greatest tensile strength out of all the metals. Because of these properties it is the most
commonly used material for light bulb filaments, that’s why bulbs are made of Tungsten, not
any other material.

6 Shadow of an airplane is flying high up in the sky never seen on the ground.
Birds flying high in the sky do cast their shadow but because they are shading an area that is
very tiny, the shadow is not visible. The higher the bird flies, the smaller the shadow it casts.

7 Solar cells are used as a source of power in satellites.

Solar panels are used in artificial satellites because if a battery is fixed it will soon run out of
power and it is impossible to use a wired switch for the satellite. As a result, satellites are fixed
with solar panels as the sun gives unlimited energy to the satellite it is therefore the best way to
give power to the satellite.

8 Repulsion is the sure test of magnetism.

Repulsion takes place only between two likes poles of a magnet whereas attraction takes place
between two unlike poles of a magnet and also between a magnet and a magnetic material. A
permanent magnet causes repulsion with one pole when the poles are brought in turn near a
suspended magnet. An un-magnetized magnet material would be attracted to both poles. So, by
attraction it cannot be surely identified the substance is a magnet or not. So, repulsion is the sure
test of magnetism.

9 Most of the iron filings cling at the ends of the bar magnet.
Maximum iron filings stick to the two ends of a bar magnet because that is where the poles of
the magnet are located. Most of the strength of the magnet is located at the poles.

10 Electric switches and boards are made up of plastic.

Plastic is safer, as the plastic creates an extra level of insulation. These are classed as double
insulated devices.

XV Answer the following questions: -

1 The role of the oxygen cycle plays in sustaining the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide 2
levels in the atmosphere? Explain your reason.
Photosynthesis and respiration are the two main processes responsible for maintaining the
balance of oxygen in air. Plants and animals are interdependent on each other and help maintain
the oxygen cycle. The oxygen cycle helps in maintaining the balance of oxygen and carbon
dioxide in the air.
2 Differentiate between movement and locomotion. 2
Movement refers to any change in the position or location of an organism or any of its parts
whereas locomotion refers to the act of moving from one place to another by using the body
parts of an organism.
3 If you are standing in an open field at 12 noon, what kind of shadow would you see of yourself? 1
We will see our shadow with a smallest size. Smallest shadow is formed at noon. The shadows
we see outside are mostly caused by the sun. The Sun is directly above us in the afternoon
because of this, there isn’t much to block the light from directly reaching the Earth, therefore a
small shadow is formed.
