[00:00:00.09]
In El Salvador.
[00:00:01.18]
[00:00:02.00]
A girl's 15th birthday is very important.
[00:00:05.18]
[00:00:06.05]
It's the day she celebrates becoming a woman.
[00:00:09.06]
[00:00:10.00]
When I turned 15,
[00:00:11.20]
[00:00:11.22]
my family had a big party for me.
[00:00:14.19]
[00:00:15.08]
We call this party la Fiesta Rosa.
[00:00:18.13]
[00:00:19.08]
Everything you wear to the party is pink,
[00:00:22.12]
[00:00:22.20]
a pink dress,
[00:00:24.04]
[00:00:24.04]
pink shoes,
[00:00:25.11]
[00:00:25.12]
pink flowers.
[00:00:26.18]
[00:00:27.10]
Anyway,
[00:00:28.03]
[00:00:28.06]
the celebration lasts all day in the morning.
[00:00:32.17]
[00:00:32.22]
You go to church,
[00:00:34.02]
[00:00:34.22]
then later,
[00:00:35.22]
[00:00:35.22]
there's a big party,
[00:00:37.07]
[00:00:37.07]
either at your family's house or some people rent a place.
[00:00:41.02]
[00:00:42.14]
Lots of friends and family members are invited.
[00:00:45.21]
[00:00:45.21]
So you need a big space.
[00:00:47.18]
[00:00:48.07]
Anyway,
[00:00:49.03]
[00:00:49.05]
at the party,
[00:00:50.06]
[00:00:50.07]
there's lots of food and dancing and people give you presents
[00:00:55.07]
[00:00:55.10]
like jewelry and clothes.
[00:00:57.05]
[00:00:57.21]
I'll never forget my party.
[00:01:00.04]
[00:01:00.12]
It lasted until four in the morning.
[00:01:03.07]
[00:01:03.16]
I had such a great time.
[00:01:05.19]
[00:01:08.20]
The second Monday in January is an important day in Japan.

[00:01:13.09]
We call it coming of age day when you turn 20.
[00:01:17.19]
[00:01:17.20]
You are officially an adult in Japan.
[00:01:19.23]
[00:01:20.19]

[00:01:25.10]
[00:01:26.12]
So what happens?
[00:01:28.06]
[00:01:28.17]
Well,
[00:01:29.08]
[00:01:29.09]
most people get dressed up,
[00:01:31.04]
[00:01:31.17]
girls wear traditional kimonos and guys wear dark suits though some also
[00:01:36.16]
[00:01:36.16]
wear traditional clothes then in the morning,
[00:01:40.10]
[00:01:40.10]
you and your parents go to City Hall.
[00:01:42.22]
[00:01:43.13]
There's a big ceremony for you and all the other 20 year olds in your
[00:01:48.04]
[00:01:48.04]
city,
[00:01:48.16]
[00:01:49.12]
important leaders give speeches after the ceremony.
[00:01:54.05]
[00:01:54.07]
You get a small present and take a lot of pictures.
[00:01:57.13]
[00:01:58.03]
Then later you get together with your friends.
[00:02:01.08]
[00:02:02.02]
Most people go to parties or nightclubs.
[00:02:04.20]
[00:02:05.11]
I remember when I celebrated coming of Age Day,
[00:02:08.15]
[00:02:09.02]
I had a lot of fun.
[00:02:10.12]
