DIVISIBILITY RULES
DIVISIBILITY RULE |
“Divisible” means a number is able to be
divided evenly with another number with no
remainders.
A number is divisible by 2 if the last digit of the
2 number is an even number. Even numbers are 2, 4, 6, 8
and 0.
EXAMPLE |
Is 3246 divisible by 2? Yes, for its end number is
an even number.
Is 4352 divisible by 2? Yes, for its end number is
an even number.
NOTE: No matter how long and big the number, it is
easy to determine if it is divisible by 2 by just looking
at its last digit.
3 A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the number
is divisible by 3.
EXAMPLE |
Is 513 divisible by 3? Yes, because 5 + 1 + 3 = 9,
9 is divisible by 3 therefore 513 is divisible by 3.
Is 4332 divisible by 3? Yes, 4 + 3 +3 + 2 = 12, 12
is divisible by 3 thus 4332 is divisible by 3.
4
A number is divisible by 4 if its last two digit
form a number that is divisible by 4.
EXAMPLE |
Is 5412 divisible by 4? Yes, for its two last digit
number is 12, 12 is divisible by 4, thus 5412 is
divisible by 4.
Is 6724 divisible by 4? Yes, for its last two digt
is 24, 24 is divisible by 4 thus 6724 is divisible
by 4.
5 A number is divisible by 5, if its last digit is
either 5 or 0.
EXAMPLE |
Is 5230 divisible by 5? Yes, for it has 0 as its
last digit.
Is 45325 divisible by 5? Yes, for it has 5 as its
last digit.
6 A number is divisible by 6, if the number is both
divisible by 2 and 3.
EXAMPLE |
Is 312 divisible by 6? Yes, 3 + 1 + 2 = 6, 6 is
divisible by 3, and its last digit is an even number
2, thus 312 is divisible by 6.
Is 63042 divisible by 6? Yes, 6+3+0+4+2 = 15, 15
is divisible by 3 and its last digit is an even number
2, thus 63042 is divisible by 6.
A number is divisible by 7, if you can double the
7 last digit and subtract the sum from the rest of the
number, and set an answer that is divisible by 7.
EXAMPLE |
Is 672 divisible by 7? Yes, for 2+2= 4, 67-4= 63,
63 is divisible by 7, thus 672 is divisible by 7.
Is 483 divisible by 7? Yes, for 3+3 = 6, 48-6 = 42
is divisible by 7, thus 483 is divisible by 7.
8 A number is divisible by 8, if its last three digit
form a number that is divisible by 8.
EXAMPLE |
Is 3816 divisible by 8? Yes, for 816 is divisible
by 8.
Is 464 divisible by 8? Yes, for this van be divided
by 8.
9 A number is divisible by 9, if the sum of all digit
is divisible by 9.
EXAMPLE |
Is 531 divisible by 5? Yes, for 5+3+1 = 9, 9 is
divisible by 9.
Is 864 divisible by 9? Yes, for it has 8+6+4 = 18,
18 is divisible by 9, thus 864 is divisible by 9.
10 0.
A number is divisible by 10, if its last digit is
EXAMPLE |
Is 5230 divisible by 10? Yes, for it has 0 as its
last digit.
Is 4532420 divisible by 10? Yes, for it has 0 as
its last digit.
11
A number is divisible by 11, when you divide the
alternate digits in two different groups and take
the sum of alternate digits separately and if its
difference is 0 or is divisible by 11.
EXAMPLE |
Is 275 divisible by 11? Yes, for 2 + 5 = 7, 7-7 =
0, thus 275 is divisible by 11.
Is 50, 182 divisible by 11? Yes, for 5+1+2 = 8, 0+8=8,
8-8=0, thus 50182, is divisible by 11.
12
A number is divisible by 12, if the number is both
divisible by 3 and 4.
EXAMPLE |
Is 432 divisible by 12? Yes, for 4+3+2 = 9 which
is divisible by 3 and 32 is divisible by 4, thus 432
is divisible by 12.
Is 11,436 divisible by 12? yes, for 1+1+4+3+6= 15
which is divisible by 3, and 36 that is divisible by
4, thus 11,436 is divisible by 12.
