Observation Report: MHPSS Field Visit of IDEA Team
Districts: Bastar and Kondagaon

Field Learnings:
Handholding session with counsellors/case workers – District Consultant was leading the
session about case history format and queries raised by the participants on using the format
with the children. Training on counselling skills, trauma-informed practice, need based
practice using roleplay, case history training and other modules in building capacities.
Mental Health Unit at District Hospital – The Nodal officer at the district hospital highlighted
cases with mental health concerns like psychosomatic issues, sleep disturbances and
addiction cases in children and adolescents which they have been regularly seeing in OPD. At
present, his support was extended by appointment of psychologist and psychiatric social
worker and district consultant supporting the team.
Interaction with District consultants – Adolescent empowerment program intensively on
parenting, identifying the stakeholders, mapping at district levels, liaisoning with line
departments, training and developing monitoring using actionable.
Demonstration of Psychosocial group session – Visited children in TRI, Icebreaking session
was conducted, and the psychosocial group session focused on kinds of emotions using story
telling model with the children and adolescents.
Demonstration of Social Emotional Learning focused engagement with school “Panthak”,
emotional wagon wheel, snake and ladder, student cabinet cell, etc.,
Interaction with Mitans, Anganwadis & PRI Members Frontline workers are the foot soldiers
in the community working for the needy people. Anganwadis, Mitans and PRI members are
one among them. Being a mediator by bringing the patients from the community to the
hospital, doing regular follow-up visits and involving family members for the treatment,
immunization, sensitizing lactating mothers, pregnant woman, supporting with mobility aids,
etc.,
Interaction with Kodanar champs’ volunteers – Challenges and experiences has been shared
by the volunteers working in each district. They are creating active linkages for social
security schemes in the community.
Meeting with key district officials – District collector was highlighting community mental
health model which is quite successful in all districts and acknowledging UNICEF work in
the districts.
Key Observations:
Critical Factors for Success
- Capacity building training for district level counsellors – looking at Trauma
informed lens, enhancing skill building in counselling, supporting in case
history taking and planning for case conference meeting, etc.,
- Initiative of Mental Health Report card for children in TRIs
- Intensive psychosocial group session with children in CCIs and TRIs.
- Bridging the gaps in the Community with the help of multilevel stakeholders
approach engagement - PRI members, Mitans, Anganwadis, Volunteers, etc.,
- Inclusion of individuals with different abled in “community meetings”
- Prioritizing Public Health in the community by addressing the mental health
concerns and context of psychosocial needs.
- Destigmatizing by initiating “the dialogue on Mental Health” in the community.
Scope for the Improvements
- Stepping into Parents' engagement can help to rebuild parenting practices and
decrease the incidence of childhood trauma.
- Resource Development in vernacular contexts – Toolkit for superintendents,
counsellors, and children.
- Capturing Case Stories – case studies from the community.
