The Dangers Of Phoaching In Africa In West Africa
Elephants are the keepers of the savannas and gardeners of the forest and are one of the
most intelligent and unique animals on the planet. Much like humans they have the
ability to feel emotion and create kinship bonds with other elephants, so much so that
they grieve over the deaths of other elephants (The IvoryGame). This is something that
very few other animals have the capability of doing. Not only are they unique in their
behavior, but also in the precious cargo they carry, known as ivory. A few hundred years
ago millions of elephants roamed the sub Saharan and the rainforest of Central and West
Africa, but less than 400,000 African Elephants exist today. If poaching continues at its
current rate the African Elephants are well on their way to becoming extinct. In the
last 20 years there has been a serious increase in demand for ivory in Asia and in the
Middle East, which has led to a serious poaching problem in Africa and an increase in
black market activity across Asia.
Despite the international ban on trading ivory introduced in 1989 by CITES,
(Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora)
elephants are still being poached in large numbers. While the ban offered a temporary
solution and the opportunity for some populations to recover, all of that was reversed
in 1999 when CITES allowed Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to sell 50 tons of
stockpiled ivory to Japan. This was supposed to be one time sale , but China was granted

Literary Devices In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
How far would you take your love for someone? Would you kill them? Would you
work them till they turn black and blue, or make them touch their own casket just to
punish or scare them? Brother seemed to have no limits for Doodle, in The Scarlet
Ibis by James Hurst. In this short story, Hurst showed the relationship between a
crippled child and his older, forceful brother. Brother pushed Doodle to his maximum,
trying to get him to walk, swim, run, and become a normal child. Yet, becuase of his
embarassment, Brother took his training to great lengths, killing Doodle in the end.
This passage uses several important literary devices that advance the story, such as help
the readers gain a better meaning of the symbols and what Hurst is trying to convey.
The first and one of the most important literary devices you can detect in this writing, is
the usage of flashback. Hurst uses flashback to develop the whole story, relationship
between Doodle and Brother, and explain what happened to Doodle. A majority of The
Scarlet Ibisis told through this flashback and past tense. The flashback improves the
story and is used in a way to show Brother at the beginning and how much his past with
Doodle still affects him. We really get to see that guilt and even his maturity when he
is older, because he goes back to all these places where him and Doodle played and grew
up. Yet even though it s so far in the past, going to his old home and fields brings back
painful memories. * In
