Shallow Foundations 2019 - Assignment - MAK

The document provides tutorial problems related to shallow foundations. Problem 1 asks for the depth a 2x3m footing in stiff clay should be founded to provide a factor of safety of 3, given soil properties and bearing capacity. Problem 4 asks to calculate ultimate and allowable bearing pressures for square, circular and strip footings in sand, given soil properties and a factor of safety of 3. Problem 10 asks to calculate the safe bearing capacity of a 2.5x3.5m rectangular footing at a depth of 1.5m in soil, given shear strength parameters and an eccentric load.

Tutorial – Shallow Foundations (To be submitted)

1. At what depth should a footing of size 2 x 3 m be founded to provide a factor of safety of 3 if the soil is
stiff clay having an unconfined compressive strength of 120 kN/m2? The unit weight of the soil is 18
kN/m3. The ultimate bearing capacity of the footing is 425 kN/m2. Use Terzaghi's theory. The water
table is close to the ground surface.

2. A footing 2.5x2.5m carries a pressure of 400kN/m2 at a depth of 1m in sand. The saturated unit weight
of the sand is 20kN/m3 and the unit weight above the water table is 17kN/m3. The design shear
strength parameters are c’ = 0 and ф’ = 40o. Determine the factor of safety with respect to shear failure
if the water table is 5m below ground level.
3.

4. What will be the ultimate and net allowable bearing pressures of a sand having ф = 35° and an effective
unit weight of 18 kN/m3 under the following cases: (a) square footing dimensions 1 x 1 m, (b) circular
footing of 1 m diameter and (c) 1 m wide strip footing. The footing is placed at a depth of 1 m below
the ground surface and the water table is at great depth. Use F.O.S = 3.
