Physics Lab: Lens Focal Length Study

This physics lab report describes an experiment conducted by a group of 5 students to determine the focal lengths of lenses. The experiment involved using convex and concave lenses along with a light source and measuring distances. Data was collected on the object and image distances and used to calculate the focal lengths. For the first convex lens, the average focal length was found to be 10.52 cm. For the second convex lens, the average focal length was 10.48 cm. The report provides the purpose, materials, procedure, data collected, calculations, and conclusions but is missing some elements like the discussion section.

Title
Focal Length of Lenses
Abstract

Purpose

Materials
The basic instruments and materials needed for the experiment are:

• Two convex lenses

• A concave lens
• Light Source (Bulb)
• Object
• Measuring Ruler
• Screen for Image
• Lens Holder

Procedure
1. Firstly, put the object in a specific distance from the light source and record that
distance.
2. Put the screen of image formation in a specific distance from the light source.
3. Next, use one of the convex lenses in a distance by which the image of the object is
sharp on the screen. Record the distance by which the sharp image appeared.
4. Then, adjust the position of the convex lens to get a second position by which another
sharp image will occur. Record the second distance from the object.
5. Finally, calculate the focal length of the first convex lens.
6. Repeat the experiment with the second convex lens.
7. Repeat the experiment with the concave lens.

Data and Results

I. After conducting the experiment, those direct results were obtained:
D2 – d2
D2 – d2 (10-2 f=
S. No D (10-2 m) d (10-2 m) 4D (10-2 m) 4D

2 49 18.7 - - -
3 54 25.3 - - -
4 59 31.35 - - -
5 64 37.3 - - -

After doing calculation, then we could obtain the focal length of the lens

II. Then, when we repeat the experiment with the convex lens. Then:

After doing calculation, then we could obtain the focal length of the lens
